Harry Suter remains Iowa chess champion after winning the Boone tournament, and holds the national title as well. He previously captured a Newton event in December sanctioned by the American Checker Federation.
Washington firemen answered an early call at 3 a.m. to 602 North Second Avenue for suspected smoke at Clarence Zieglowsky residence. They traced odor to a hot air register where a plastic spoon had burned in the furnace, causing no damage.

President Nixon blocked Agriculture Department access to farmers tax returns to protect taxpayer privacy. A high ranking official says this decision could cost the government several million dollars. The department sought only mailing lists from IRS to improve crop and livestock survey accuracy.

Watergate case developments move the secret grand jury report on President Nixon to the House Judiciary Committee. Haldeman and Strachan cannot appeal to the Supreme Court before a 5 pm EDT deadline, clearing the path for release. Sirica previously ordered transfer, with Jaworski and Bray noting the report’s delivery to Capitol Hill.
Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski extended the deadline to Friday for President Nixon to respond to a subpoena seeking White House materials related to Watergate. The move follows White House delays and calls from Sen. Howard Baker for a compromise on 42 tapes and documents, with no new items disclosed.
Washington High School participants in the Iowa State Speech Association contest in Fairfield earned Division I and II ratings. Seventeen Washington students received I ratings from two of three judges in events including Dramatic Acting, Book Review, Interpretive Poetry, Interpretive Prose, Expository Address, and Oratorical Declamation, with others earning Division II in Original Poetry and related categories. Faculty advisor Carmen S. Griggs guided the group as about 1,206 Southeast Iowa students competed statewide.
Sgt Wayne D. Petersen and Sgt Earl Usher explain security routines for Governor Ray, noting that patrols differ from guarding national leaders, the switch to highway patrol in 1970, and their routines including drive patrols, parade route checks, and mansion security.
UPI reports Secretary of State Kissinger and Soviet leader Brezhnev opened three days of talks in the Kremlin to resume negotiations on a SALT agreement this year. They also planned to discuss trade and Middle East diplomacy as detente remains fragile. Brezhnev called the start optimistic and noted good U.S.-Soviet relations while stressing ongoing work.
Mrs. Marty E. Sixt of Iowa City will speak at the Washington County Iowa 2000 meeting in the YMCA Community Room Thursday at 7 30 p m. She has chaired environmental quality work for Iowa City League of Women Voters and led environmental concerns for the Chamber of Commerce. The symposium features Dr. Robert Engel Kenneth Ducker and David Hammond with a later session forming four task force groups for discussion under the Town 2000 plan initiated by Governor Ray to involve Iowans in state future planning. Charles Hotle and John Davis co chair the natural resources task force.
In Allentown Pennsylvania a firebombing at the Caboose Bar killed eight patrons and left five in critical condition while two more were in guarded states. Firemen pulled victims from the building as witnesses recalled horrific scenes. Ernest J. Burton Jr., 24, surrendered to police forty-five minutes later amid reports he had been expelled from the bar earlier that day.
Iowa City residents vote on a 6 million bond to finance a 5 million downtown parking ramp atop a mall with 1 million for public improvements. The measure aims to revitalize the downtown with shops and housing, but critics urge emphasis on housing and green spaces. A 60 percent majority is required for passage.
