Marines Repel Dozen Red Attacks Near DMZ

U.S Marines fought back a dozen Communist assaults across the DMZ in savage close combat that left 146 Reds dead and Marines with 25 killed and 154 wounded. Far south near Da Nang Viet Cong ambushed three convoys, destroying 82 vehicles and causing heavy Vietnamese casualties. Air strikes targeted Bac Giang while Navy jets bombed the plant as fighting spread through northern provinces.

Doctors Fly Secretly To Cuba For Missionary Eye Surgery

Two American surgeons Hagler and Taylor entered Cuba from Spain with State Department approval to operate on 67 year old Baptist missionary Rev. Herbert Caudill held on currency violation and counterrevolutionary charges. The operation on his remaining usable eye was reportedly successful and Caudill faced blindness without it.

Sailor dies in one car crash near Red Oak

United Press International reports Ronald E. Reynolds, 20, of Elliott, died instantly when a car driven by Arlo Towne, 22, of Griswold, left a county road eight miles north of Red Oak. Towne, with minor injuries, may have fallen asleep. The 1967 state highway toll reached 132, 14 fewer than last year. Two other separate crashes Friday killed James Merritt, 18, and Pamela Putney, 16, in Des Moines. A back-seat couple, Michael Whitlock, 17, and Pamela Rogers, 15, were hospitalized. In Castalia a 17-year-old, Mark Koenig, died when his tractor was hit by a train at a crossing two miles east of Postville.

Annual egg fight draws Peters Hollow crowd in Tennessee

About 1,000 people expected for the traditional Peters Hollow egg fight near Elizabethton. Contestants haul as many as 40 dozen eggs to crack others’ eggs by tapping small ends. Notable past eggs include Little Brown Leroy Taylor Blue Luster Deward Taylor and Brook Taylor. The event follows church and features picnics and family reunions at Ray Lowe’s home on Stoney Creek.

Light draft mail favors keeping college deferments

Congressional mail on the draft is light but mostly argues to continue student deferments. Most input supports delaying the call up of 19-year-olds, favoring 26-year-old first and preserving deferments, with farmers and parents among the most vocal groups. Johnson’s advisory panel backs calling 19-year-olds first, but the issue remains unresolved.

Brush Fires Sweep Western and Southern Iowa

Strong winds fanned multiple brush and grass fires Friday across western and southern Iowa. About 400 acres burned in Decatur County near Leon, with crews from Leon and Lineville plus nearly 100 volunteers tackling the blaze. Additional fires near Fiscus in Audubon County were controlled by Extra, Audubon, Manning, Kimballton and Elk Horn departments. Guthrie County saw a large 70 to 100 acre blaze east of Guthrie Center and another 7 mile southwest timber fire. Firefighters from Guthrie Center aided by Bayard, Bagley, Panora, Casey and Menlo fought those blazes. Several farm buildings were destroyed. damage estimates were not yet available.

Clowning Ends in Youths Death in Hammond

A Lansing Illinois youth Glen Pawloski, 19, was killed Friday night in Hammond when he fell from a car trunk and was struck by a passing auto driven by George Weiss, as he and two friends jumped onto the bumper and into the trunk. Pawloski died at the scene while others were not held.

Bulldozers scour former gangland cemetery in New Jersey

FBI agents with three bulldozers searched a Jackson Township chicken farm for more victims tied to underworld killings. Two Cosa Nostra figures, Angelo Sonessa and Kenneth Later, were unearthed earlier, with Leur remains found in a moonshine tunnel and an acid-buried body nearby. The farm owner and his wife were held as witnesses.
