Bruce A. Taylor 45 appeals a 865 fine for reckless driving after Tuesday’s hearing by Judge Donald A. McDonald. New evidence was presented and Taylor received an additional 50 fine and four Sundays in jail.
The Iowa House approved 78 to 18 a resolution to form a joint investigating committee to scrutinize the State Conservation Commission. The panel would subponeal witnesses and spend up to 2000 for investigators, amid auditor charges of excessive travel and plane use.
An Iowa legislative committee failed to reach a compromise on a yellow oleo bill after two meetings. Oleo backers walked out angrily as butter forces claimed slight progress. The bill has passed both houses, but a triangular cutting rule was opposed. a conference committee was set to meet again to seek a deal.

A 27 year old woman admitted using an old con game to swindle Lincoln resident Mrs Max Butler of 1000 and flee to Omaha with a companion in a taxicab. Police found money in their coats and said Miss Jean Roberts 27 and Miss Slaine Scott 26 were arrested at the Omaha airport. Both claimed Des Moines as home and provided a Des Moines street address.

Montezuma sheriff and deputy arrest A. W. Carpenter 61 Steeleville Missouri on a tip from a tavern operator. Carpenter is charged with forging two checks in Grinnell and one in Montezuma last month all for 61.96 each. The forger reportedly used the same amount in cashing bad checks across Iowa.
Waterloo officials face a transit gap after the Waterloo Cedar Falls and Northern Railway announced it would not renew its franchise when it expires on Sept. 29. Mayor Pat Touchaine told the council that every effort would be made to preserve public transportation.
About 900 CIO United Packinghouse Workers walked out for the second day at the Iowa Packing Company plant over hours. A union spokesman said workers returned briefly and then left after company officials asked for promises before time cards. Officials planned to meet later to seek an agreement.
Crawfordsville rural mail carrier Ernest L. Clark. 63. was hospitalized at Washington county hospital after a collision south of Crawfordsville today. Clark’s jeep was struck by a semi driven by Richard Weiss of St Paul Minnesota while turning from Highway 218 onto Wyman road. Clark sustained facial lacerations and cuts. Vehicle damage estimated at $275 for the jeep and $50 for the truck. Sheriff’s office investigated.
The Odd Fellows lodge met Tuesday with three visiting members from North English Lodge including an area director who spoke on instruction of candidates. Roy Stewart at Pines Rest Home suffered another stroke last Friday. Two membership applications were accepted. A family social is set for Friday March 27 with Stalder's orchestra. The charter was draped for a deceased member. Refreshments followed with LeRoy Jugenheimer John Killian Earl Nicola and Charles Murdock assisting.
Norman Benn a Washington high school junior uses the party line to sell tickets to the operetta H M S Pinafore. He phones his aunt and within one call has sold ten more tickets to neighbors overhearing the sale.
Howard A Hopping 78 of 108 West Jefferson Street died at noon today after a year of declining health. He was born January 10 1887 south of Washington, a retired farmer, lifelong resident, and a member of the Methodist church. Survived by daughter Mrs Dale Bales, four granddaughters, sister Mrs Loie Babcock, and multiple siblings. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at Jones Funeral Home with burial in Shrock Cemetery.
DES MOINES Iowa began drafting 19 year olds into the Army the first time since World War II Col R A Lancaster state selective service director said today the first 19 year olds were called in February and more will be drafted to meet monthly quotas

Summerfield and Young announce new tests to raise eligibility standards, discarding old lists, while preserving permanent status for about 20,000 incumbents. The process blends merit with political appointment in districts.
Reuben F. Smith of Marshall town and executive with Iowa Light and Power, lieutenant governor of division I in Kiwanis International Nebraska Iowa district, delivered the speaking engagement in Washington.
Mr and Mrs Ludwig Blank and daughter Renate arrived in Kalona to join relatives of Mrs Willer after more than eight years of separation. The Blanks had been in Austria and Germany, while Anna Willer Blank lived in Duisburg. A dream followed in the night.

U S infantry attacked Old Baldy Mountain in Korea for a second time but could not dislodge Chinese forces who held about three quarters of the peak after a 10 hour assault. Major General Trudeau, commander of the Seventh Infantry Division, said the position is not vital to the sector. Fresh U S troops joined the effort but the Chinese mortar and machine gun fire kept the hill in their control.
