Creston R H Knapp a Burlington railroad conductor fell 35 feet in the dark from a Villisca Iowa bridge as he stepped from a train not knowing it was on the bridge. His hip was dislocated and he is in a local hospital.
Emmet county schools girls will showcase their spelling contest held for the public. The event will be broadcast on radio station WNAX in Yankton South Dakota.
Des Moines Governor Kraschel issued a combined proclamation covering Child Health Day on May 1 Mother's Day May 8 and Better Parenthood Week May 1 to May 8. The declaration consolidates three observances into a single eight day period.
Waterloo court convicts W. A. Green for liquor law violation after discovering eight gallons of alcohol hidden in a tank installed between walls of his home. Sentenced to three months in jail.
Des Moines reports the Iowa old age assistance department received a federal grant of 1 410 257.92 for old age pensions for Apr 1 to Jun 30. The aid to the blind division of the social welfare board also received 32 503.25 in the same period.
ELKADER Interest in Bilka s glass block school building spreads to Europe. Supt. D L Wood received a letter from Prague Czechoslovakia from the editor of Der Bauunternahmer a building publication asking pictures and facts concerning the building.
Carroll-Douglas Harlan Smouse, 14 months old, died in a local hospital from poison given by his three-year-old sister while playing at home. Physicians reported the child fed him 16 pills before parents discovered the incident.
Police locate a healthy about twenty day old baby boy left in a doctor's car near a hospital in Keokuk. Officers examine footprints and a smallpox vaccination to identify the parents as the investigation continues. The infant is in hospital under care while authorities pursue leads.
Dr Effie McCollum Jones of Webster City a Universalist pastor sustained serious scalp burns when hair dryer combs ignited spraying flames over her head after she washed and dried her hair in front of an electric device.
Luke B. Miller owner of the Sterling grocery says he wrote President Roosevelt and the Department of Justice asking for a federal investigation of Mason City police and city officials. He accuses police acting under orders of the city manager of wrecking his business by tagging cars parked in the alley behind his store.

The seventh district shows eight contenders with Oather Wearin seeking the senate. First and fourth districts see limited fields with a mix of announced Republicans and Democrats and several unannounced affiliations.
A Washington report dated March 25 outlines a bill intended to halt helium exports. The measure seeks to control supplies and impact energy and scientific sectors dependent on helium.
The United States posted a $99,648,000 favorable trade balance in February as exports reached $262,733,000 while imports fell 41 percent from the prior year. Shipments into the U S totaled $163,085,000, down from $277,709,000 in February 1937, with recession curbing demand for foreign materials.
At the First Ward caucus held yesterday evening seven delegates were chosen to represent the precinct at the county convention. The selected delegates are Oscar Davis R F McFarlane Lucy Langenberg Mrs Frank Bostwick John Squire Vane Wallace and Bert Ward George Rudiger was elected committeeman and Mrs Co W McLaughlin committeewoman for the ward.
Notice states the hearing on the Washington lateral pipeline, initially set for March 28, is postponed to April 8. The hearing will take place at the Iowa State Commerce Commission offices in Des Moines.
London reports that Great Britain is giving urgent and sympathetic consideration to Secretary Cordell Hulls proposal for international cooperation to care for Austrian refugees. The official statement stresses a constructive, humanitarian response and international collaboration.
Keokuk investigators pursue a lead from a Washington county plate near a Keokuk physician's car where a 20 day old baby boy was found in good health. A day old smallpox vaccination was noted and officials consider Iowa City as a possible birth hospital. No further local progress by noon.
Senator Vanden burg of Michigan introduced a proposal in the Senate today to port helium for airship purposes to Germany or another country, prompting discussion on gas supply and logistics.
George Mohr a faculty member at Washington junior high school was chosen president of the Washington County Safety Council at the annual meeting held yesterday evening at the high school. Vice presidents were Mrs J L Fry Kalona and Dr Frank Mahin Ainsworth. Paul Horak Washington was re elected secretary and Mrs Paul Snakenbere Washington treasurer. Dean Harland Mead Washington junior college outlined plans for a one semester automobile driving course with dual control lab work and classroom instruction for the next school year in Washington high school credits toward graduation. He also announced a future highway safety essay contest with prizes from a women's club. Mead noted recent safety showings in county towns and schools totaling 1% to 2% showings in the past week. President Krabill reported on the year’s activities including county safety day observance last fall.
Mr. Krabill reports the flag atop the Washington hotel was shredded by wind and weather. a new flag will be placed at a better spot. The Washington county organization now has about 300 members. He urges education and control of student drivers near the high school at noon when schools dismiss. Patrick Payne of Omaha, former chief of police and safety director for a large bus line, delivered the address at last night’s meeting.
In Sioux City on March 25 Mrs. Nina Anderson 85 wrote two calm notes foretelling danger and settling affairs. Minutes later she was shot by Leland Erwin 49 and died as Erwin killed himself, after a possible motive tied to hospital treatment. In her notes she warned her daughter Mildred to be careful and mentioned $20 in her purse.
Washington county records show more couples wed this year with 33 licenses issued by March 25 compare to 17 by the same date last year. Yesterday’s licenses were to James Allen Jr of Columbus City and Jean Gentzler of Columbus Junction and to Paul Kadine and Agnes Carroll of Knoxville with Knoxvilles officiant Justice J. K. Bo vee.
Mr and Mrs Paul Redeker of Keota were seen shopping in Washington this morning as they visited local stores and carried purchase bags through the downtown district.
The Senate today passed a resolution authorizing a comprehensive inquiry into the Tennessee Valley Authority. The probe targets TVA leadership including chairman Arthur Morgan, directors A Morgan and Davis Leithen, and potential private sector involvement in TVA activities.

Gorham returns from Washington where he worked with J C Penney and Benteco, and is brother to Paul Gorham of the Eve ning Journal. He is noted as a top kittenball player and arrives with his family from Pella seeking housing.
William H. Brown of the Ainsworth community announces his candidacy for membership on the board of supervisors for the term beginning January 1 1939. He is an experienced farmer near Ainsworth and asks Washington County voters to consider his bid for efficient county administration.
