City Election Battles Over Expansion Plans At Mt Pleasant

Mt Pleasant voters face a biennial city election with two tickets the Citizen’s Ticket backing the current administration and the Taxpayers Ticket seeking to oust it and pause a near one million dollar expansion of the light plant. The editorial warns of economic austerity regardless of the outcome and weighs the council’s decisions on electricity expansion. It also notes Truman’s address to mayors, congressional tension, and calls for soil conservation measures in Iowa.

Washington barber's shop history spans nine decades

Tom Rickey runs his Washington Iowa barbershop in a site with a 90 year history of barbering. The current building dates from about 60 years ago, and the shop has changed hands many times before Rickey acquired it in 1925 after working in several local shops. Rickey's career also includes farming and streetcar work before barbering. The piece also notes early spring harbingers like meadowlarks and robins observed on a trip from Fairfield, plus a brief mention of a forthcoming electronic office answering gadget and a remark about women's weight concerns in air travel.
