Howard J. Byers of Des Moines former attorney general and house speaker died today after a long illness from kidney complications. He was 71 and leaves a widow and five children. Byers served in multiple Iowa assemblies and as corporation counsel for Des Moines. He headed the 1908 Republican state convention and was active as a Washington legal counselor. Funeral arrangements were not announced.
