Two small children watched their Norbert Kurtz farm home burn four miles south of Brighton as Mrs. Kurtz was away at Ottumwa with their daughter and Mr. Kurtz at Mt Pleasant. Firemen from Richland Brighton and Washington brought the blaze under control at 11 50 am, likely starting in a basement woodpile. neighbor Frank Peck found the flames and the school released the children to the scene.

May Hatch and 87 turkey growers within a 10 mile radius of Wayland organize as the Wayland Turkey Growers Association. They met at Flowers school in March to plan educational programs and study local hatching and processing. Officers include Karl Gingerich president and Levi Roth as chair of the membership committee. The group plans monthly meetings and projects an annual 3,000 birds per member and about $2,000,000 in sales each fall.
In Carter Lake Iowa, defense and prosecution prepare closing arguments in the second bingo case. Mabrey disputes an Iowa Supreme Court ruling on bingo legality, claiming his free smorgasbord bingo is lawful. The Carter Lake Recreational Club serves food, but defense says patrons need not buy food to play.
George Wilkinson, 27, formerly of Waterloo Iowa, started as secretary of the Washington Chamber of Commerce this morning. He previously served as farm placement representative for the Iowa State Employment Service in Waterloo and fills the vacancy left by Kenton Mangold. Wilkinson is single and a member of the Toastmasters club and the Farm Bureau.
Hong Kong AP reports U S officials plan to seek British aid to release three Americans believed aboard the yacht Kert captured by Chinese Communists. U S Consul General Harrington said action would go through Peiping’s British mission. the 42 foot vessel is in Communist custody near Hong Kong with Richard Applegate and others aboard.
James Aukerman a 45 year old Kanawha High School music teacher died from an accidental .22 rifle shot while target shooting on Leroy Wicks farm five miles south of Kanawha Coroner Robert Eaton said Aukerman stumbled while carrying the rifle in the fall and was shot in the head.
A Des Moines woman identified as Mrs. Durell, about 30, was found dead in her North Side home after a shooting that also injured her brother John Funaro, 25. Police arrested barber George F. Funaro saying he witnessed the incident and described a confrontation with a man named George.

Two physicians, Dr. John J. Judge and his brother Dr. Thomas Anthony Judge, died when their car struck a bridge abutment at the east end of the Columbus Junction viaduct. The driver suffered a broken neck and instant death. the passenger died en route to a hospital. The doctors, en route to Albia, were from La Salle Illinois and Davenport Iowa, with survivors including a wife and five children for Dr. Judge. The report lists funeral arrangements and family details.
