A local column reports two incidents in Iowa. Lester Eden, 47, a farmer, died at his home when a falling tire tree struck him as he and his son worked. In Iowa Falls a tractor accident on Highway 65 left 28 year old Bradley Meyer injured after the machine left the road and the rider was thrown.
Phillips Petroleum Co reports the test oil well ten miles south of Creston has reached 2806 feet with water within 450 feet of the tip. Three inch cores from rock formations were microscopically examined by drilling officials.
John Weber suffered a broken jaw and possible skull fracture after being thrown under a manure spreader he was working near. He was pulled into the machine when it suddenly moved forward. Earlier in February his house burned down, and the family escaped by jumping from a porch roof.
In Davenport six of seven meat dealers arraigned on charges of possession of adulterated meat pleaded guilty in Police Magistrate John J. McSwis court. Each was fined 26 dollars plus costs with the 25 dollar penalty suspended. I F Jasper the seventh dealer asked for a continuance. Fred K Payn state food inspector testified that merchants used sodium sulfide as a preservative in hamburg. He recommended leniency.
Des Moines area sergeant Jes Lee at Kort Des Moines army post cleared driver Alvin Ford of 22 of blame in the death of his wife, 25, who was nearly deaf and struck while en route to their home. The sergeant said they had spoken at the post minutes earlier and she likely did not hear the approaching car or see its lights.
Howard Copenhagen, a neighbor, arrived from a field to warn Mr and Mrs Harry Stephens Sr as their Lima area farm home burned. He found the couple inside, assisted their escape, and carried Mr Stephens to safety after a heart attack. Mrs Stephens escaped unharmed.
In Des Moines the Interim Committee approved 35000 for a 4-H club dormitory at the state fair grounds after a anticipated 65000 grant failed. The 1984 legislature later appropriated 50000 for the dormitory with a planned 85000 WPA contribution.
Emmetburg report says William Mundus eleven confessed to firing a .38 rifle that struck his brother Bernard in the Mundus farm yard last Sunday. Sheriff Montgomery indicated the shooting was accidental and no charges would be filed. William, described as a quiet rural student, expressed remorse after a week of silence.
Iowa officials warn farmers no extension will be granted beyond the March 30 sealing deadline for 1940 corn loans. Mortgages must be registered, loans applied for, moisture tests taken, and sealing completed by county committees. Secondary CCC insurance applies once sealed. failure to act within 10 days drops coverage. As of Feb 29 1940, about 117.7 million bushels were under seal, with a conservative post deadline estimate near 120 million.
Convicts at Dartmoor Prison riot for two hours as Irish Republican Army inmates set a cell block on fire bound guards and ran through parts of the penitentiary. Devonshire police were rushed in to subdue the disturbance amid an Easter holiday crowd gathered outside. A roof hole appeared in the block as shooting was heard from inside while authorities restored order.
The YMCA received three official gym basketballs from the Central States Basketball Association. Worth about $25, the quality is described as excellent and suitable for gym work. A company note says the balls were sent as a gift in appreciation of the Gold Medal tournament recently conducted by the association.
County Treasurer Marion B. George reported $114,790.33 paid in Washington county taxes since March 1, with $103,009.31 from a year ago. Taxpayers have until March 30 to complete the first half payments, and a larger share are paying in full in March rather than split payments. January and February totals reach $66,458.51, bringing $181,548.84 paid in 1940 so far. total 1940 tax levy is $777,023.47 with $258,511.24 due this month.
The association supplied medals and trophies for the tourney. A minimum of eight teams is required, and twenty six competed in the Washington event.
Des Moines reports near zero temperatures for Easter with forecasts of zero to ten degrees above in the north and south of the state. The cold pushes Iowa 23 degrees below normal, with Duluth at 19 below zero. Mason City records one below while Charles City and Iowa Falls reach four above as light snow and slick roads complicate travel.
The Methodist choir presented The Crucifixion last evening with praise for thorough training. Highlights included Processional to Calvary and The Appeal of the Crucified with soloists Milo Sorden and Mrs ED Morrison Jr. The program thanked organist Edna Klein and Director Mrs Warren, noting a $22.76 offering.
Indications show the year’s homestead tax credit totaling about $115000 will be reached by month end. Half of this amount is credited this month by the state tax Commission, with heavy payments anticipated next week.

Tom Carson of Washington was chosen president of the South eastern Iowa Master Plumbers association at a Turner hotel Fairfield meeting on Thursday evening. Officers named include Frank Taylor Ottumwa as vice president Walter Frey Fr Madison as secretary and treasurer. Carson is among the youngest officers in the group which covers Os kalooga to Muscatine Keokuk and Centerville and his presidency makes him a director of the Iowa Master Plumbers association.
Driving licenses were issued to eleven persons here yesterday after they passed examinations by Ben Bentzinger of the state highway patrol. Seven failed and were denied licenses. The successful include Hurley Bloomer Muscatine Richard Day Brighton Marion D. Miller Raymondell Harry D. Hamilton Elmer Sojka Burchard Holden Washington Russell Martin Wellman Mrs. Everette Davis Crawfordsville Guy Young West Branch Raymond Pickard Jr Pleasant Plain. Exhibits were dismantled after three evening runs at the Legion post industrial show. The event raised funds for Leon Beatty post treasury and boosted local business via advertising. Attendance was strong, with larger crowds than two years ago, though last night’s numbers fell due to bad weather. Betty Cozad performed a dazzling dance routine and MC Martin Whittaker drew attention as he hosted. A Mt. Pleasant Legion delegation attended to study the model for possible adoption locally.
