Influenza outbreak aboard transport Chateau Thierry alarms Capitol

The Chateau Thierry carrying 13 congressmen and 553 sailors sails toward San Francisco with four deaths and about fifty influenza cases aboard. Reports say first class passengers remain unaffected and medical staff prevent spread while preparations for swift hospital treatment are readied.

Iowa House Rejects Auto License Fee Reductions

Des Moines March 22. The state house killed plans for auto license fee cuts, defeating the Ontjes and Christopher bills that would have tied fees to vehicle age or weight. The measures would have reduced revenue by over $2,000,000. The house also passed the Hager junior college bill with amendments, pending voter approval and state superintendent consent.

Washington board discontinues high school agriculture course

At the first meeting of the Washington board of education the agriculture course, run under Smith Hughes federal vocational law, was voted out due to dwindling enrollment and lack of demand. The decision ends the program at the close of the school year despite praise for instructors Schoentag and Montgomery. The board also re elected Dr EF Stutsman president and prepared to fill former member changes. Petitions circulate for a junior college adjunct to the high school, with potential self sustenance.

Girls Stage Clean Up Act at Rotary Meeting

Health Unit girls directed by Miss Ada Wilson performed a comedy titled Clean Up depicting a dirty eatery transformed by Salvation Army Mimi and Jim the proprietor. Cast included Baja Boller Mickey Eva Burham Spud Louise Bell Eloises Kisor Catharine Lohberger Sam Helen Helwick Irene Paul and others with Edith Carr at piano. The skit ends with a cleaner shop and lessons on reform.

Follies Company Stage Good Show at Graham Theater

The Midnight Follies company presented Abbie's Trish Friends last night at the Graham theater to a large audience. The show featured an excellent Jewish comedian a male quartet two colored dancers and a capable chorus with special scenery and costumes. Syd Chaplin in The Man on the Box preceded the play. The Graham was nearly full for the performance.

Court Denies Plea for Inspection of Bankers Life Books

DES MOINES March 22 Judge O S Franklin denied W G Mellier of Kansas City real estate broker a writ of mandamus to inspect Bankers Life Insurance company of Iowa records since 1911 The judge ruled the request lacked merit and that the information sought was available with the state insurance commissioner Mellier sought the 65 000 certificate holders list and tried to restrain the company from its annual meeting and officer election, but was denied.

Bootlegger Grecian Held After Iowa City Hospital Fight

John Grecian a Kalona bootlegger is in an Iowa City hospital with a broken jaw and bruised eyes after a fight with Kalona man Kidon Ayers. A raid on Grecian’s Kalona premises yielded three pints of alcohol and evidence of extensive illegal sales. Ayers pled guilty to assault and battery and was fined one dollar plus costs.

The stone houses in Mammoth Cave were erected nearly a century ago by tuberculosis patients who believed life inside the cave would cure them.

City Council Votes Budget and Utilities Contracts

At a regular meeting the council passed the annual budget ordinance for the next fiscal year starting April first. Allocations cover salaries fire and police departments street work health sewer maintenance and contingent expenses with additional funds for libraries water works and cemeteries. The body also set bond provisions for city officials firemen pay and a garbage contract bidding period ending April first.

Mrs. Lucketts Turkington of Wyman died at eight o'clock this morning. Her sister Mrs. Br. V. Simons received a phone message about the death. Turkington had visited Washington often and had many friends in the area.

The Washington county hospital training school announces a class of student nurses starting in June. Applicants need at least three years of high school or equivalent and must be eighteen. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary A orgies were held yesterday afternoon at the JL A Jones funeral home with Rev Willard Wylie and Rev J Steude McCrory officiating. Music by Miss Carolyn Hamilton assisted by Mrs Hugh M Ber y. Pallbearers included Charles Ragan Charles Langenberg J A Conger John Warnock BR B Cook and Albert Cherry. Telephone Lines Not Yet Repaired From Ice Storm

Crews of linemen work for Washington Telephone Co to restore service after the severe ice storm that damaged poles and wires. Some rural lines remain out until tomorrow while toll lines to the west and southwest reopen. Iowa Southern Utilities lines restored except Winfield. Radio aided repairs to Olds via Acnsaworth and a Muscatine message helped close a switch near the John Adams home.
