Charleston West Virginia reports a blast at Rush Run and Red Ash mines near Thurmond. Ten killed in the initial explosion and fourteen others die rescuing colleagues after a second blast and afterdamp. Devastation includes damaged drum, tracks, and the fan, with hundreds rushing to the scene.
At sixty miles an hour the Erie Pacific express plunged 20 feet after reservoirs fell into a switch frog near Winfield Station. Twelve injured, two possibly fatally, include Frederick Peavey and William Drake with severe injuries, Mrs. H Cairo internal wounds, and several others with head cuts, fractures, or internal injuries.
Missouri Pacific passenger train No. 34 crashed into a burning bridge three miles west of Salina Kansas on March 20. The wreck destroyed the engine and baggage car and left four trainmen injured: Engineer Charles Walton with a serious scalp wound. Charles Sherman, fireman with facial and leg bruises and scalding. Ed Bonner, news agent with a back sprain. Mail Clerk Campbell with a shoulder wrench. Passengers were shaken but escaped.
In Cincinnati on March 20 the body of a 22 year old woman was found near Lovers Lane. Police link the death to a serial killer who attacked prior victims at the same site in recent months. The suspect, described as armed with a dagger and dressed in fine clothes, is believed dead from a stab wound.
In Muskegon Michigan on March 20 Daniel McPhail a recluse marked his 101st birthday. He lives by trapping and has long kept to his solitary routines.
Special to The Evening Journal reports a boiler blast at the R. B. Grover shoe factory in Brockton Massachusetts this morning. At least fifty workers feared dead as the fire raged for hours and twenty bodies were recovered by noon amid severe burns and damage.

Pittsburg March 20 Charles Strip tke street commissioner of Allegheny was convicted of aiding and abetting the keeping of an unlawful home and accepting a bribe.
Mrs. George Yeaman, her sister Mrs. J. H. Jones, and her two children Gladys and Frances Yeaman were badly burned in a gas explosion in Sioux City on March 20. The blast lifted the roof after a match was struck. Mrs. Yeaman is not expected to survive.
New York reports 386 deaths from Crebro spinal meningitis since January 1, with most victims children, as the winter outbreak continues to claim lives.
Milwaukee March 20 The American Tobacco Company will contest Wisconsin anticigarette legislation. The company has kept its attorney in Madison but has shown little opposition while hoping the measure will be ruled unconstitutional after it goes into effect.
Mrs. Walter Davis of Alexandria, guest at Roe Carr’s Kokomo home, became ill and asked for castor oil. Carr, in error, administered carbolic acid, causing her death. Carr is prostrate and may lose his mind.
In a tense closing session amid several fights and near riot conditions the Missouri legislature elected General Wilbur Warner senator Kerens had released allies to vote for any viable candidate.
Mount Vernon Indiana March 20 ex policeman Henry Barnett was shot in the abdomen and fatally wounded on the streets by officer John Williams after long running bad feeling between them Williams surrendered. Steamship Sylvania launched at Bay City Michigan by American Shipbuilding for Duluth Steamship Co with G A Tomlinson managing owner Miss Marion Davidson Young christening. vessel 524 feet overall.
Madison Wis March 20 Chicago won the return indoor meet from Wisconsin by a score of 41 to 36. Wisconsin led late by taking the pole vault and the relay first leg but Chicago captured the pole vault and the opening relay leg as part of a dead heat that split points.
Paris on March 20 the Dreyfus revision nears completion. The appellate court named Maı tre Maurice Jaffard to draft its report and many expect the final ruling to fully rehabilitate Dreyfus.
The headless body of a man was discovered by a section crew on the Great Northern road near Island Station, about sixty miles from Duluth. A search for the head was conducted but proved unsuccessful.
The czar Nicholas I and Grand Duke Alexis, heir to the throne, born Aug 12 1904, are discussed with note of Alexis health after a croup episode. The czarina bore four daughters before Alexis, who is the succession’s focal point amid imperial family details.
President Roosevelt altered George L. Dobson Iowa to Nottingham appointment and shifted him to Hangchow China while George E. Anderson moved to Amoy. The change preserves Frank W. Mahin at Nottingham after Iowa senators objected to Dobson's initial posting.

District Attorney Jerome sues the American Tobacco Company Continental Tobacco Company and all subsidiaries for 287000 alleging violation of state lottery laws. The actions arise from contests offering 142000 to the sharpest guessers of taxed cigarette quantities within a period.
The federal government later offered 145000 dollars to individuals who made the nearest guesses of the actual number of votes cast for the winner of the last presidential election.
Secretary of State John Hay is boarding the White Star liner Cretic for Naples after a dramatic collapse caused by overwork. He is described as exhausted and unable to walk stairs, needing a wheeled chair, with physicians prescribing a six week rest after the voyage.

August H. Kienlen 54 a supervisor for Edwardsville township hanged himself due to ill health in Edwardsville.
John White of the drying room recalls a half hour chase inside the North American Chemical plant in Bay City. A would-be murderer armed with a large knife slashed at him thrice, injuring his leg arm and cap before escaping. White was exhausted and delirious by morning.
Port of Spain reports from Barcelona and Guanta Nazional that Venezuelan President Castro ordered immediate seizure of Guanta Nazional coal mines, leased to an Italian company for 33 years. Venezuelan troops seized the mines the same day, despite an Italian manager’s protest and without Caracas court judgment. Baron Alcott, Italian chargé d’affaires, has registered a formal protest.
