The Iowa Legislature debated a bill to raise the gasoline tax from four to five cents for two years with disputed spending. Washington county stores will sell fishing and hunting licenses for the coming year beginning April 1. The recorder Lana Stewart notes licenses may be bought at the recorder’s office in the courthouse and at listed local stores in Brown’s Courtesy Corner, Coast to Coast, Gamble’s, and others. Last season 714 fishing licenses were sold. 1,526 fishing and hunting licenses issued. 1,258 hunting licenses. 100 trapping licenses also sold.
Mrs Arthur Martin 36 and Linda two died in a fire that destroyed their home near Dayton Fort Dodge. Three others were severely burned and two in serious condition, while seven children escaped unharmed. The family lived in a large house with relatives present.

Twenty three volunteers from a U S Navy sealed submarine test at New London leave the craft after two months. Cmdr Gerald J Duffner notes the study shows humans adapt to long confinement with high carbon dioxide levels though one finding is a strong craving for cottage cheese. The dairy craving is attributed to calcium needs offset by cheese in the CO2 rich environment.
A wartime bulletin reports a B 36 atomic bomber with 23 on board crashed near Random Island Newfoundland and no survivors sighted. Earlier a B 20 with 10 crew members crashed into St George's Bay, with no confirmed survivors. A medical team from Fort Pepperell reached the wreck and began a daylight search.
Air Force officials say Russian airplanes likely conducted reconnaissance near Alaska Canada and Greenland. Vapor trails were seen over southern Greenland during MIG jet operations against American and British planes over Germany. They call vapor trails the main evidence and note several sightings over months may involve Soviet aircraft.
President Eisenhower said there is no good reason for a congressional investigation of communism in churches. He argued communism is not taught or tolerated by churches and criticized the idea as unnecessary. He also outlined views on taxes, defense, the Seaway project, and foreign trade.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored the Washington Trade Show at the armory ending Wednesday evening with WHO radio stars performing before an audience of over 1100. Jaycees called the event a big success and said most attendance gifts were claimed, with other winners to be notified by merchants. A ship sails northwest through the Panama Canal from Pacific to Atlantic.
Berlin dispatch cites sources saying Moscow ordered Soviet and satellite pilots to shoot down all Western Allied planes that stray into Communist territory. The claim links the reward to retaliation for the detention of a Russian MiG-16 in Denmark and suggests this may explain Czech and American air attacks.
An American family’s inexpensive basement shelter survived an atomic blast at Yucca Flats though the home was crushed. The Federal Civil Defense Administration says a shelter was tested to withstand the concussion at a quarter mile away. Officials warn a shelterless home would still be lethal.
