Berlin March 18 members of the appropriations committee urged the government to consent to using the war fund of 30 million dollars kept in the Julius tower at Spandau for current empire needs. They argued against keeping the sum sequestered while the country borrows and pays interest to cover deficits.

Three men died in an explosion that wrecked and burned the planing mill owned by George Kemp in Crandon Wisconsin. The dead include Kemp the mill owner an engineer and an employee named Hawkins. The cause is not known.
In St Petersburg on March 18 a duel between Lieutenant Generals Smirnoff and Fock likely left Smirnoff fatally wounded. The confrontation arose from a memorandum Smirnoff wrote about the Port Arthur siege questioning Fock's courage.
Augusta Georgia March 17 Tyros Cobb told the Associated Press by long distance that he is considering an offer of 5500 a year to play with the Washington club of the Union Baseball League and would accept if he cannot reach terms with President Navin of the Detroit club.

In Wheeling West Virginia March 18 Chas Cook aged seventeen his wife Lila twenty and Joseph White twenty one were arrested over the death of Charles Bennett twenty from New Kensington Pennsylvania. Bennett's body was found in the Ohio river at Vegee on September 24 last. The trio allegedly confessed that Lila Zane Miss Cook enticed Bennett a book agent to a river shore where Cook and White killed him. They supposedly married afterward and used eighty five dollars taken from Bennett.
Marvin Hart of Louisville was awarded the decision in the fourth round over John Wille of Chicago on a foul. After a clinch Hart stepped back as Wille swung a hard right to the ear, Hart fell and could not respond. Hart's ear may be seriously injured.
A U S firm won the war office competition for infantry gear in St Petersburg market. Forty six foreign and Russian firms entered designs, with full reequipment funding unlikely, so only a trial may be funded.
