Highland Community kindergarten roundup date and locations

The Highland Community School District schedules its 1976 kindergarten roundup on Tuesday March 23. Children entering kindergarten next fall should report to Mary’s Hall in Riverside from 9 a.m. to noon or Ainsworth Elementary School from 1 to 3 30 p.m. Bring birth certificates. Grant Wood Area Education Agency will conduct vision hearing and speech screening during the roundup.

Washington County scroll time capsule signings schedule set

Donation details finalize for the orientennial scroll to be placed in the Washington County time capsule on July 4. One dollar for families, fifty cents for adults, and twenty five cents for signees in high school or younger. Funds offset bicentennial observance costs including the pedestal. Dr. Marvin L. Tweeton, a local chiropractor and longtime director since 1973, was elected president of Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association Monday night, succeeding the late John A. Winga. He is active in civic affairs.

Accident charges follow one car crash in Richmond

William D. Plank of Wellman was charged with OMVAS after a one car crash in Richmond Tuesday night. He appeared in Magistrate Court and was released to an alcoholism counselor pending an April 2 preliminary hearing. He received minor head injuries and his 1976 car was damaged $1,000. In Pekin, a $165 million bond to fund a new elementary school passed 62.4 percent.

Court rules rights must be protected in guilty pleas

The Iowa Supreme Court in four cases reversed lower court rulings on testimony, evidence, and sentencing where defendants pleaded guilty. The court ruled plea of guilty does not waive the privilege against self incrimination and criticized trials omitting direct confrontation of accusers. Gerald Wall, arrested in 1974, pleaded guilty to forgery after passing a bad check.

Ford Carter win Illinois primary in decisive victory

President Ford and Jimmy Carter swept Illinois, handily beating rivals Reagan Wallace and Shriver. With 98 percent of precincts, Ford led Reagan 47 760 to 35 267 in the GOP race while Carter had 617 8998 to Wallace 359 686 and Shriver 207 362 in the Democratic contest.
