Shenandoah reports Sam Parrett an auto salesman was hospitalized after a sudden nose bleed. Attendants used a pack to stem the bleed, and the condition was stabilized after more than 48 hours.
Fort Dodge The Builder Supply Co reports theft of seven cases of dynamite from its explosive vault south of Fort Dodge. Officers believe the explosives may have been used to blow safes at Newell and Spirit Lake.
Shenandoah James Ubil, 85, partially blind, suffered severe leg burns when he walked into a bonfire started by his crippled brother Dave. Neighbor Mrs. H. H. Hatcher rushed to the scene with water to extinguish the flames.
Marshalltown man Harold Hoep pner was jailed after a honeymoon for issuing false checks. Proceeds allegedly financed his wedding last December. He remarked I got through the honeymoon as he was led away to a 60 day sentence.
Shirley Starr of Le Mars, a University of Iowa coed, accepted a friend’s fifty cent bet to swim the flood swollen Iowa River. She wore a swimsuit and crossed the river in five minutes despite ice, debris, and water three feet above flood level, finishing more than a block downstream.
Eighteen Des Moines patrolmen stationed at key routes from Minnesota to Iowa. Under Assistant Chief Harry Nestle they were ordered to halt incoming Minnesota trucks until owners purchase low licenses.
Grinnell College will host W. Kot schnig general secretary of the International Student service Geneva Switzerland as guest speaker in the chapel Wednesday to address students.
Workmen uncovered a 1871 manuscript titled by Mary Riddle in the oldest building at the Iowa State Teachers College campus. The room was being remodeled when the orphan girl’s faded composition was found. the building once served as a state orphan’s home for Civil War orphans.
Emmett Ryan, regarded as tops in the profession here, argues that tobacco chewing and dirty aprons are passe. He asserts patrons now expect clean attire and well spoken bartenders, not ill condition environments.
Harry Whettine of the Wellman community was arrested last night on a bootlegging charge and was jailed. A hearing was expected before a judge today.

Judge Frank Bechly opened a new term in Montezuma district court and assigned cases for petit jury trials starting Monday March 23 at 2 PM. Several probate and civil cases list parties such as Wood Administrator v Moore and Ferguson v Latchem, with more trials set for March 24 25 and March 20. Grand jurors were ordered to defer appearance to be called later in the term.
A. Raston of Washington schools announced that the annual spring vacation will begin at the close of school on Friday March 27 and run until school opens Monday April 6. The southeastern Iowa teachers convention will be held at Oskaloosa during the break and many teachers are expected to attend.

Washington March 17 IN S Thousand of income tax returns poured in by midnight. Preliminary estimates show treasury revenue at least 50 percent higher than 1935. First 13 days of March collections ran well ahead of last year with 58 440 083 received versus 36 250 947 in the same period a year ago.
Royal Oak Michigan March 17 A spectacular fire destroyed the old shrine of the Little Flower used as Rev Charles Coughlin broadcasting station. Four fire companies battled the blaze, which damaged the convent and saved the new shrine. loss estimated at 40000 dollars.
Italian planes dropped mustard gas on Quoran in northern Ethiopia injuring hundreds. An Ethiopian official report says seven aircraft released poisonous gas. residents were incapacitated but saved by dry air and lack of humidity. Italians have targeted this area from the air multiple times this month.
Ames March 17 Charlies Friley acting head during Hughes leave was today appointed head of Iowa State College. The former president resigned due to ill health and is now in England. Finley joined Iowa State College in 1952 from Texas.
KE A Umland of Plano Indiana visited Washington to interview the Chamber of Commerce chief and arrange a cheese plant across from the Eclipse Lumber site on North Fourth. He will repair and equip the building for cheese making and operate daily milk pickups from local farmers. The plan includes selling locally and supplying larger distributors. his brother Fred remains in Illinois to run their existing plant.
Thelda Tracy daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Tracy of this city joins Augustana college mixed chorus for a spring tour starting March 20 with first eastern appearances. NBC Blue Network broadcast March 26 from 1 30 to 2 pm. The group visits Bloomington Paxton La Porte Cleveland Philadelphia Brooklyn Hartford Norwich Worcester Jamestown Ashtabula Detroit Grand Rapids and ends in Rock Island with a concert at Galesburg on April 5.
Murray Smylie reports his uncle Clark Davison 77 of Lennox died last night in Cres ton hospital after a period of illness. Born and raised in Washington he was the son of William and Mrs Davison. Smylie and his brother W I Smylie will travel to Lennox for the funeral Thursday afternoon.
Glenn Barclay has been in the grocery business for 29 years. He previously ran stores in Brooklyn Iowa and Whittier California. He believes a few more years will reveal whether he wants the grocery business as his life’s work.
A delegation urged the Fort Wayne city council to require permits and written consent from 51 percent of property owners and residents within a block before opening new businesses in residential areas. The council asked the city solicitor to study the proposal as WPA underpass plans near North Second Avenue proceed.

Ace Allen notes Mrs Mayer failed to see an approaching slowly moving truck due to distraction by another car and a third vehicle exiting the park. The truck driver could not avoid the collision, causing the crash.
The Washington Board of Education re elected Claude Tucker as president and E A Ralston as superintendent at the first meeting of the new year. Committees from the past year were re appointed. Teacher elections for next year were postponed pending a later meeting.

Germany rejoined the league of nations today for the first time since leaving in 1935. Chancellor Hitler said the German delegation would join the council table when the discussion begins Thursday, with Dr. von Hoesch and Joachim von Ribbenstrab arriving to represent Berlin.
Washington lodge of Masons joined a state wide assemblage with nearly all lodges meeting at the same hour. Iowa Supreme Court reverses and remands Harold M. Cooper's conviction for violating liquor laws. The 6 a side decision hinges on the word such in the statute, sending the case back for a new trial. Cooper, former Iowa liquor control chief, resigned May 1, 1935 at Governor Herring's request.
