Old Ironsides, the U S Constitution, was relaunched in Boston after three years in drydock. Reconditioned with 400000 from American schoolchildren, the ship will tour ports to inspire youth as poets and historians recall its 1797 battle fame and Holmes verses.
Boise authorities sought the authors of a pamphlet calling for death by own action after it circulated among high school students. The siege pamphlet criticized society and religion and followed the recent deaths of two local youths, prompting a citywide response.
In Cedar Rapids on March 15, prosecutors and defense for George E Huckins argued over the weekend and prepared to resume Monday as to charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. The exact nature of Huckins business remained unclear though officials warned it risked law enforcement action. Mrs B N Richards traveled from Ainsworth to visit and shop.
Leading Iowa Democrats endorsed candidates for governor lieutenant governor secretary of state auditor treasurer agriculture and railroad commissioner and for U S senator Daniel Steck. The slate attacked the national Republican administration in its opening 1980 campaign push.
A school carnival is planned for Friday and Saturday March 21 and 22. Organized by the Girl Reserves and HLT elves and run under the direction of organizers including Barbara Oddy and Harvey Coulter, the event aims to raise funds for charity and club activities. Volunteers list includes many local names across booths and attractions such as Milk Booth, Rifle, Fun House, Band, and Publicity. Weather outlook: March 17 to 22, upper Missisippi valley and lower Missouri valley expect light precipitation early and late week, with near normal temperatures.
Funeral services for W. A. Phil lips were held Thursday afternoon at 2:0 at the L. A. Jones funeral parlors. A large crowd was in attendance from Cedar township and out of town. The services were conducted by Rev. C. E. Hamilton of Prairie Flower Baptist Church assisted by Rev. A W. Yard of Marshalltown, a former pastor. A male quartet sang two selections. Pallbearers were Dave Benson Tom Reeves W. D oth Arthur Wyne Earl Smith and Tanks Mouser. Interment was in Fim Grove.
Ray McCormack 17 and Ger ad Haberman 16 of Prairie Du Lac Wisconsin confessed to a plan to rob a filling station and fled with a 22 caliber pistol. They shot Officer Hanteld at Luxemburg and later fled to East Dubuque before being captured at Dubuque jail. The boys said they dressed McCormack in a woman's clothing for the escape.
A change of fifteen minutes was made today for the cooking school periods at the high school next Tuesday to Friday. Misa Louise Dixon of New York will lead the cooking school sponsored by the Journal. Doors open at 1 45 PM for crowd assembly, and the Washington county women are invited.
The Washington Methodist Panthers face the Ainsworth United Presbyterians in the county Sunday school tournament final at eight. The Methodist Wildcats meet the Presbyterian Juniors for the third place game at seven after morning semifinals where the Panthers defeated the Wildcats 13 to 3 and Ainsworth beat the Presbyterians 9 to 8.
Mrs Ella Kerber Resch a reporter for the Youngstown Ohio Vindicator was arrested for contempt of court during the trial of Mrs Irene Schroeder. She refused to reveal who supplied her with Schroeder’s life story, part of a purported autobiography tied to the murder case of Corporal Brady Paul a highway policeman.
Delb Green faced state law proceedings over his death penalty options after reportedly killing his wife and her husband at their home where the couple fled following a quarrel. A baby son slept nearby as the killings occurred.
In Washington on March 15 the senate rejected Senator Walsh of Massachusetts who sought to cut the proposed duty on raw hides from four to ten cents a pound. Walsh’s amendment aimed to remove hides from the free list and would impact leather and shoe industries by raising tariffs. Crawfordsville hosts the sectional girls basketball tournament with Crawfordsville versus Colter at 7:30. Winners meet Columbus Junction in the semi finals Saturday at 10. Letts forfeited to Grand View. Wayland meets Wyman at 8:39 for a spot in the Saturday 11 a.m. final. Referees Amy Christian Leila Anderson Elfriede Cartano Harriet Barrett Arabelle Crone replaced.

In a multi state pursuit, three bandits who killed Deputy Sheriff Cart Hickman near Cheyenne Wells and robbed the Manter bank fled across Colorado and Kansas. Armed with machine guns, a large posse chased them as they abandoned a car near Jetmore, with lawmen expecting a possible gun battle. The trio surrendered after days on the run, while authorities secured vehicles and loot including rifles and sacks of silver.
The body of Mrs. John Bryson who died yesterday was moved from the funeral home to the Bryson home on North Second Avenue. Friends may call there this spring, and funeral services are to be held Sunday afternoon at the Daping church.
