Vice President Henry A Wallace told Des Moines listeners there is nothing wrong with middle west spirit and morale. He praised national morale as marvelous and noted coast watchers differ on attentiveness while predicting war production will hit full tilt in about two years with peak lines in a few months.
Os caloosa reports Rev Errol T. Elliott pastor at First Friends Church Indianapolis has been named president of Penn College to succeed Dr Henry Edwin McGrew. Elliott 47 was born near Carthage Missouri and is married with four children He will start duties after the current school year. He served in World War I era Quaker unit with the American Friends Service Committee and on the Herbert Hoover Committee on Food for Small Democracies.
Police say about 180 dollars in coins mainly gold were found hidden in a bed where Harvey H Porter, an auto thief, was arrested. Deputy Hoover noted the coins matched the loot description from a Mount Ayr elevator break in. Porter was traced to Creston after buying overalls in Afton and a railroad ticket there.
Billy Morphew six son of Mr and Mrs Fay Morphew of Lake Park died at a Spencer hospital from injuries after an auto crash near Lake Park. The car with his father went into a ditch and struck a culvert. The boy had a skull and nose fracture while the father was treated for two broken legs at Spirit Lake hospital.
Captain W H Owen Jr formerly head of the CCG camp at Keosauqua and former Ames resident now commands a section of the Corregidor fortress in Manila Bay. His letter dated February 4 passed by the naval censor reveals he enlisted last summer and was sent to the Philippines last August. His wife and two young sons in Fairfield had not heard from him since December 13.
DES MOINES The Polk county grand jury indicted Bert L. Smith former Delaware township justice of the peace for embezzlement. Smith has been free on bond since his December arrest in Kansas City Missouri where he used the name B L Clark and obtained Kansas license plates for his car. He told officials he went to Kansas City to try to obtain funds to cover Polk county justice court fines and fees.
DES MOINES The attorney general's office ruled that a veteran on county relief rolls cannot be sent to the county home against his wishes. Such individuals must be cared for through county relief channels.
The United States Selective Service announces a third wartime draft lottery to be held Tuesday evening in Washington. The drawing will determine the order of classification for men born 19 to 21 and aged 35 to 45, starting at 6 p.m. Iowa time and lasting about 17 hours.
The Ninth Naval District announced plans to convert the 2500 passenger Great Lakes liner Seeandbee into a training aircraft carrier. The overhaul would relocate four stacks, remove the upper deck and superstructure to install a flight deck. Built in 1913 for Buffalo to Cleveland service, the 500 foot sidewheeler has a 98 foot beam and shallow draft.
The Waterloo will of Clement J. Murphy, a local jeweler, provides funds to educate four students through college. If funds remain after supporting those four, the Mabryn A. Murphy fund may support Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.
Senate leaders awaited budget bureau approval for a bill to raise pay for soldiers and sailors by about 268 million dollars annually. The plan setsPilots and ordinary seamen at 42 dollars a month, up from 21, with increases for privates through sergeants and ratings in the navy and other services. Commissioned officers would gain for second lieutenants and flight ensigns from 1500 to 1800 dollars a year.
The scholarship fund was established as a memorial to Murphy's daughter, a graduate of the school who died in 1935. Murphy left his interest in a jewelry store to his partner, Robert Sherburne.
Chicago police found Jane Dobinski 21 strangled in a north side apartment where she slept with husband Peter 21. He admits quarrel over divorce and says they slept apart. Doctor reports possible poisoning with froth at mouth. coroner to rule on cause. Dobinski, a Drake graduate and Northwestern student, says he choked her a little but claims he did not kill her.
Washington patrolmen Don Braden and John Rhynsberger arrested Dean Carlisle of Columbus Junction on Junction street after a near collision. Carlisle faced a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and was arraigned before Justice of the Peace John Dickson. He was bound over to the Louisa county district court grand jury in Wapello.
Mrs Dorothy Walters sues in district court to gain custody of her five year old daughter Lola Mae Laflore allegedly held illegally by Clarence and Lucille Shod. Hearing on writ of habeas corpus set for Tuesday. Walters claims the child lives with the Shods in an improper hotel environment downtown Sioux City.
A Salinas Marine Corps recruiting officer rejected five applicants, including a woman who arrived with four police dogs. He noted that enlistments are for unmarried men aged 17 to 30 and that dogs are not allowed. The episode highlights standard eligibility rules for Marines.
Roy Gilbertson of San Francisco writes Pecorah ten days before legal death to inquire about his mother's estate. He was named beneficiary of about $15,900 from his mother and uncle Richard Engbertson, and will now receive funds previously slated for others after being located before December 1.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion plans the 28th anniversary observance next Tuesday evening at seven in the Legion rooms. The Red Cross chapter opens home nursing classes next week under nurse instructors. Women who completed first aid may join, but graduates are not nursing aides subject to active duty. County chapter execs meet to coordinate Red Cross with Civilian Defense and plan the annual meeting at the Y with board elections for the coming year.

Newton Wilkins 83 died yesterday at step son Orin Warren’s home near Fairfield after months of illness. Born July 27 1858 near Ainsworth he was a longtime farmer there. Surviving are wife Effie Moore Warren a half sister and two nieces. Funeral 2 PM Sunday at United Presbyterian church Ainsworth. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Burial
One commissioned officer and nine enlisted men from the First Iowa State Guard Washington unit will travel to Des Moines Monday to attend the provisional battalion camp and school of instruction at Camp Dodge. The five companies in the battalion will hold a Sunday officers meeting in Iowa City led by Major Raymond Wright.
