Voter turnout was generally light in most precincts with Riverside and Richland showing more activity. Riverside defeated a 40,000 bond for a school addition while Richland approved upgrades. other towns reported small totals and occasional party abstentions as results trickled in.
Washington annual Trade Show sponsored by the Jaycees opens at 6 45 pm in the armory. A local style show by men and women merchants starts at 8 pm with prizes and a window of gifts. Five hundred dollars in show prizes, free ice cream for the first 250 children each night, and multiple booth prizes are offered. Admission 50 cents adults 10 cents children. Participating merchants include J C Penney Joe Falk Klein Klothing Montgomery Ward Spurgeon s E M Bridges Co Tom Duncans and more.
Davenport officials prepared to file improper guardianship charges against Betty Van Buskirk after four children were found unsupervised in a cold Davenport apartment. A 14-year-old aunt cared for them as a malnourished three-month-old girl was hospitalized. The husband, Robert Van Buskirk, recently received a larceny sentence at Fairfield.
The Washington IOOF and Rebekah lodges join to sponsor the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth. A Washington High School sophomore or junior will be chosen from five finalists to attend a 16 day tour including six days at the United Nations in New York.
Wayland Community Club chairman Ethan Brooks announces Herb Plambeck of WHO Des Moines will speak at Wayland High School Thursday evening with slides from his Russia trip last fall. Proceeds benefit a charity. Tickets via Wayland merchants or sales committee members Wade Huffman Elmer Meyer and Ivan Wyse.
William G. Stewart 71 lifelong Washington resident and former assistant postmaster died Monday after a stroke. Services set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. William Grossheim. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He is survived by a son Tom, two daughters, four granddaughters, a brother, two sisters, and a wide circle of relatives.
Greek Ambassador to the UN Palamas asked Dag Hammarskjold to place Cyprus problems on the General Assembly agenda with a memorandum to follow within ten days. Greece declined Security Council action for now but left the door open, seeking U.S. intervention and warning NATO may be at risk.

William Case, 54, was critically wounded when a 12 gauge shotgun discharged and struck him in the chest in his Davenport apartment. He allegedly tried to crawl to a phone but died unable to reach help. landlady Mary Deters found him. Police investigate whether the wound was accidental or self defense.
Contest Judge Mrs Leslie Smith foods and nutrition specialist from Iowa State College extension service will judge at the county baking contest sponsored by the county Farm Bureau Women at the Willits Building Wednesday afternoon. Township winners may enter the county contest which is open to the public after judging and a baking demonstration. Only lard as shortening is allowed. Gov Hoegh will visit the display north of the Methodist Church after his talk at the swine producers banquet Wednesday evening.
The Navy unveils the first sea going guided missile command headed by Rear Admiral John H. Sides aboard the cruiser Boston off Guantanamo Bay. The Terrier missile fires to targets up to 10 miles and the fleet may add more ships and the atomic powered carrier by 1961.
Boleslaw Bierut, 63, longtime Polish Communist official and former premier and president, died in Moscow after a heart attack Monday night. News of his death came from Moscow Radio and PAP. His body lay in state in the Hall of Columns of the Soviet House of Trade Unions as top Soviet leaders prepared to pay respects.
Kalona school bonds totaling 115000 were sold to Beyer Rueffel and Co of Davenport Tuesday evening to finance a school construction program. The bonds were bid at 2 percent on a bar basis.

A huge skyhook balloon 250 feet long and 150 feet in diameter carrying four cosmic ray measuring packages was launched at 7 47 a m from Iowa City airport. The operation required steering adjustments and a crowd delay before the ascent to 20 24 miles altitude in a northeast wind. The balloon will shed the equipment after 8 to 10 hours and descend near Lake Michigan with data gathered by University of Iowa and MIT scientists.
Eight farm belt senators, led by Sen. Frank Carlson, push a two-price wheat plan as an amendment to the farm bill. The plan would guarantee parity for domestic human consumption wheat and market price for export grain, with a referendum to apply next year. Administration support appears limited but possible amid votes on soil bank and price support measures.
Wash ington High School today released the honor roll for the fourth six weeks with students achieving a B average or better. Freshmen Sophomores Juniors and Seniors listed include dozens of named students across classes and activities. An ordinary pancake turner makes an excellent windshield scraper for automobiles.
The House approved a one year extension delaying the April 1 drop in corporate tax and excise duties on beer whiskey and cigarettes. If not enacted the tax cut would occur automatically on April 1 with significant revenue loss. The bill now moves to the Senate for prompt action.
