Lt. Thomas G. Foster met his wife and children aboard a military transport from Korea but Army officials stopped him from leaving the ship. He was instructed to reboard and walk down the gangplank in proper military fashion.
Walter Gormly, 38, again resists tax payments citing antiwar stance dating to 1943. He sent a partial tax return but withheld money while seeking a 1950-51 computation. Government moves proceed to determine owed amounts after prior seizures from 1947 to 1949. High school senior Haynes Hutchinson referenced.
Oklahoma City reports investigators seek 50 or 60 more patients after paroled physician Huch Marshall prescribed chloral hydrate to Hank Williams and his wife. Williams died in his car in West Virginia. Mrs. Marshall died in Albuquerque. State Rep. Robert Cunningham leads probe, raided Marshall's apartment, and cites found lists of patients and doctors in Albuquerque Houston and Oklahoma City.
Ohio University physics professor Byron T. Darling refused to answer most questions before the House Un American Activities Committee about Communist party membership or passing information. He testified he never acted as a courier or agent for the Communist party or Russia but declined other inquiries citing self incrimination. Darling, 41, was relieved of duties at Ohio State University by President Howard L. Bevis for refusing to disclose party membership.
The Osterhouse Family of WCAZ Carthage Illinois will present a sacred concert at the Methodist church Sunday at 7 50 pm. It is part of a winter joint union service with four denominations. This marks their fourth local appearance featuring Swiss hand bells musical glasses piano accordion duets and readings. They have broadcast on about 90 stations and appeared in 1500 churches. The Melody Hour airs daily on WCAZ and the public is invited.
Congress appears willing to approve President Eisenhower's plan to transform the Federal Security Agency led by Oveta Hobby into a Department of Health Education and Welfare. The reorganization would take effect in 60 days unless vetoed, with joint hearings to start Monday and leaders predicting passage.
High school students in Washington county are reminded that entries for the VFW Auxiliary patriotic essay contest must be submitted by midnight March 15. George Wilkinson of Waterloo to become chamber secretary here starting March 23 after a week long board search. He will travel to Washington tomorrow to meet local merchants and learn the business. Wilkinson is a World War II veteran with prior work at Doane's Agricultural Service and the Iowa State Employment Bureau. Charles Hotle also announced Clinton Stewart as the chamber’s representative on the Recreational Council.
Funeral services for Jack Maule will be held Sunday afternoon at Marsh funeral home. Maule died Thursday morning. He was born December 11, 1901 in North English and lived in North English and Keota. Survivors include his daughter Mrs Wayne Shaw of Webster, sisters Mrs Harold Holmes of Keota and Mrs Carl Nolan of New Mexico, and brother Olin Maule of Austin Minnesota. Burial in North English cemetery conducted by Rev. Brower.
