In San Francisco a first grade teacher played The Star Spangled Banner every Friday while a student guessed it is the song shown on TV before fights. The moment highlights classroom dialogue and misconception during a routine lesson.
Police seek a man after Earl McMurry 64 was killed at a Des Moines filling station. Robbery may have yielded between 400 and 1500 dollars. A 15 year old newspaper boy last saw McMurry with a Negro near the station before the crime was discovered. Mrs. McMurry had called about 4 pm and found no answer.
Two Soviet type jet fighters attacked a four engine RAF Lincoln over the divided German frontier. One British sergeant died as the crippled bomber landed in flames inside the Soviet zone. Three crew parachuted out, one survivor found later. The incident followed two similar attacks in recent days amid Cold War air clashes.
The Senate Armed Services Committee affirmed Gen. James Van Fleet's testimony that Korea faced serious ammunition shortages throughout his 22 month command. The panel approved a subcommittee inquiry to identify officials and conditions behind the shortages as they noted improvements after his departure.
Republican leaders and Gov. Beardsley discussed a new public employee pension plan funded by a 1 percent payroll tax. The plan would replace the current pension as a supplement and cost about 1.75 million dollars yearly. If enacted, employers and employees each pay 0.5 percent of wages into the fund, raising employer contributions to 4 percent. Meanwhile the House approved 91,300 dollars to upgrade the State Police radio system, relocating stations in Fairfield and Atlantic and adding new sites at Britt.

A 42 year old West German refugee narrowly escaped as East German police fired during an attempted arrest. He fled through his backyard into West Berlin while another refugee drove a furniture truck toward the border pursued by a relative. Alfred Joachim said border guards fired at him but he was uninjured.
Mrs. Lilly Riggs 65 of Ames mother of eight and widow of a minister was chosen Iowa Mother of the Year. She will represent Iowa in the national Mother of the Year contest in May. She is widow of Rev. Fred Riggs former pastor at Ames Des Moines and Webster City. She has five sons and three daughters and was honored for her family church and missionary work and aid to Iowa State College students.
President Eisenhower asked Congress to turn the Federal Security Agency into a full Cabinet department of health education and welfare with Mrs Oveta Culp Hobby as secretary. The plan places control over the Public Health Service Office of Education and the Social Security Administration under a new department and sets up an undersecretary and two assistant secretaries. Approval would require a majority vote in either house within eight congression al working days. The department would also appoint a special medical advisor and advisory education panel while seeking broader social security coverage and stronger food and drug laws.

Coast Guard cutters and seven planes searched the stormy North Atlantic about 1,000 miles east of New York for the bow of the Liberian tanker Angy missing since an explosion and fire broke her in two four days earlier. Eight or nine persons were believed aboard the bow, including the captain and his wife, while 28 crewmen were rescued from the stern. The Angy carried 109,000 barrels of crude oil en route from the Persian Gulf to Philadelphia.
William E. Cahill aged 38 received a 30 day jail term in the county jail for intoxication. He recently moved to Washington and worked on the construction of the new high school addition.

L. E. Blick of 608 South Avenue B reported spotting two robins on his lawn Wednesday afternoon, signaling the birds' return for winter weary residents of Lowans.
Donald J. Neighbours appeared before Judge Frank Bechly in Kaloosa on Wednesday and was fined $300 for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. His driver’s license was suspended for 90 days.
