Washington March 12 Pure Food Expert Dr Harvey Wiley lectured 100 Holy Cross Academy girls warning that soft drinks often exceed coffee in caffeine and include deadly drugs He likened selling impure food to bank vault looting and urged abstinence from such beverages.
Mrs Clarence Mackay visited Albany to persuade the judiciary committee to support the woman suffrage bill but the committee voted 11 to 2 to report against the measure. Senator Root, the new state leader, had opposed it.
Des Moines report notes equal suffrage lost in the senate by 37 to 11. The limited suffrage bill for women failed 36 yeas to 12 nays, ending the movement for woman suffrage in this session.
St Paul Minn March 12 The Minnesota house of representatives has defeated the woman's suffrage proposal ending the bid for equal voting rights in the state.
Baldwin Wisconsin March 12 The State Bank of Baldwin is in the hands of the state banking commissioner. Liabilities total 300000 with deposits at 216000. Capital stock 50000. N B Bailey of Hudson owns half the stock and serves as president. Commissioner Bergh cannot say whether depositors will lose or not.
Manila dispatch reports Governor General Smith visiting Pope Isio, the black pope of Negros Island tribes, who faces execution. The constabulary urges commutation to life imprisonment to prevent unrest when Isio’s death allegedly triggers a follower claiming resurrection and trouble in Negros mountains.
A sewer trench eight feet deep collapsed in Hamilton Ohio burying three men. Rescuers recovered the bodies of James I. Robinson with a broken neck and Alexander Howard with a crushed chest. Thomas Revera was pulled out alive but with internal injuries and a broken leg and likely to die.
John Philip Sousa won a trap shooting tournament in Pinehurst North Carolina on March 12. He shot from scratch and scored 83 points out of 100.
A campaign urges Secretary Wilson to reverse his ruling that flour bleached with nitrogen peroxide is adulterated. Millers nationwide flood the secretary with letters, many routed through congress members.

Philadelphia March 12 The anthracite coal operators refused to grant any miner demands and proposed renewing the existing three year agreement before it expires March 31 They argued higher wages would raise coal prices and declined to reopen the eight hour day or recognize the United Mine Workers of America Most miners appear opposed to a strike.
Ulysses E. Glick statistical secretary of the National Drainage association and former Republican state headquarters manager was arrested in Wilmington on a civil service complaint. Held on $4 000 bail on charges of soliciting 2 percent of federal employees salaries for political contributions. warrant by John J. Doyle Civil Service secretary.
Nashville March 12 General William Washington closed his defense in the Cooper Sharp murder trial of ex Senator E W Carmack. Two more lawyers resume tomorrow as the jury deadline nears. Washington dramatized his theory of the shooting and criticized the state's cross examination as risky. Colorado Springs reports 27 inches of snow the heaviest in thirteen years.
The DC Court of Appeals narrows limits on the American Federation of Labor in the Bucks Store and Range case. The latest ruling by Justice Robb upholds Gould’s decree but allows the federation to refer to the boycott only by listing it among other “We don’t patronize” items.
Wisconsin cheese manufacturers and dealers establish a central board of trade to be based in Milwaukee. The Wisconsin dairy board of trade, first of its kind in the United States, was decided at a Plankinton House meeting of about fifty cheesemakers and dealers.
In Yekaterinoslav Russia an encounter between anarchists and police left two anarchists dead and five police officers wounded. The clash occurred amid ongoing unrest as authorities crack down on radical groups.
