General Rosecrans Passes After Long Life of Service

Los Angeles March 12 General William Starke Rosecrans dies at nearly eighty from old age on a ranch near the city while his family is at his bedside. He served eighteen years in the U S Army rising to major general and held civil posts including U S minister to Mexico and California congressman.

Alaskan Boundary Dispute Treaty Denial Reported

Rosecrans Takes Command and Battles at Corinth 1862

Halleck places Rosecrans in command of the right wing of the Army of the Mississippi after Corinth evaculation. On June 13 Rosecrans assumes command of the Army of the Mississippi. By September 18 an engagement at Jacinto aims to dislodge Price at Iuka but coalition problems and heavy fighting delay success. Confederate forces retreat to Corinth, where the Battle of Corinth begins October 3 and ends October 4 with a decisive Union victory. Rosecrans then leads from Corinth until October 26 when he moves to command the Army of the Cumberland. Survivors note the army’s nadir in October 1862.

Murderer caught confesses to Lambert murder in Wilton case

Ben R Willis alias Charles Jerome Sharp was captured by Pinkerton detective Roach and local police for the December 17 1897 killing of David S Lambert at Wilton Connecticut. He admitted to a confederate Max Brokhaus after a sweating torture by Pinkerton Assistant Superintendent Robertson. The crime began with Mrs Lambert bound gagged and chloroformed while her husband was shot. Mrs Lambert later freed herself and sought help as Lambert died December 21. Willis was en route to California when arrested in Columbus Ohio based on information tied to a Columbus acquaintance.
