Des Moines UPI reports Governor Robert D. Ray admits the Iowa General Fund will likely run a deficit of about 25 million, 13 million more than his original forecast. He unveils a nine point program to cover the gap without new taxes beyond the planned increases, including higher income taxes and cigarette levies, and an 8 million economy drive across state government.
Washington Community school board actions include approving a 6800 base pay for the coming year, raising $100 from the current base, and scheduling a salary committee meeting next Wednesday at 9 pm. Resignations accepted include Harrington Griggs Ulin McDonald Jeffrey.
UPI reports heavy ground fighting in the Sepone area of Laos as North Vietnamese tanks allegedly enter the area amid massive air strikes.
