Victor E K Degn stood by his car on a railroad track in Ogden Utah when freight cars rolled at him. The cars knocked the vehicle into the back seat and slammed the door, pushing the car off the tracks. Degn suffered a bruised hand.
A large audience enjoyed R. U. R. C Ros sum s Universal Robots presented by the Augustana chapter of Alpha Psi Omega at the high school auditorium. Don Tornquist directed the melodrama with a large college cast from Rock Island NL led by Tom Tomlinson and Marilyn Kbusekros. Harold Wehr, Y's Men's club president, introduced the program. The final forum on April 23 will be by the State University of Iowa music department.
Merle Steele was elected commander of VFW Post 2808 at the annual officer election held in the VFW hall Tuesday evening. Installation set for April 28 with Dale Atkinson, post commander, presiding. numerous officers and appointees named for the local post and its committees.
The Iowa House refused Senate calls to force triangle cutting of yellow oleo, sending the bill to a conference committee. Speaker W. S. Lynes named two oleo backers and two opponents to the joint panel, with four Senate members to be named. The bill would legalize yellow margarine sales. the triangle rule targeted household use only. House amendments kept oleo sale legal while dropping triangle requirements.
A Canadian cold wave cut short a Midwest spring preview with light snow reaching northern Kansas by Thursday. Minnesota Wisconsin and Iowa could see rain or snow as the air mass moves east. The cold mass spread from western Canada into northern Montana and northern North Dakota, and Great Falls Montana dropped 30 degrees from 64 to 34 within two hours.
Washington reports 16 000 professional gamblers purchased federal gambling tax stamps since July 1. The Bureau of Internal Revenue collected 75 000 dollars from stamp sales through January and 5 777 000 dollars as 10 percent of bets handled by registered gamblers in the first seven months of fiscal 1953. Full year receipts are expected to fall well short of the 400 million dollar estimate, with fiscal 1952 take at 5 945 000 dollars.
South Korean troops surged through 10 inches of snow to surprise a North Korean position on the Eastern Front. After an hour and a half of close combat, at least 14 North Koreans were killed or wounded as action along the front remained limited to patrol clashes and a cold rain turned to snow.
A 250 pound bomb fell from a returning Corsair and exploded aboard the carrier Oriskay off Korea killing two men and wounding 15. Six men were reported in serious condition. The pilot could not release the ordnance on a mission over North Korea and the tail hook jammed as he landed.
A crippled children clinic convened Tuesday in the Methodist church basement with county medical society approval. State Services for Crippled Children staff aided by locals consulted with families. Ethel Gregg led arrangements. Volunteers from the local women’s group and Keokuk county staff assisted, including Mary Conkity and Eileen Jeffery, with Ethel Gregg and W. J. Powell among professionals.
Funeral services were held at 3 36 o clock Tuesday afternoon in Sherman s funeral home with Dr E L Haney and Dr A C Douglass in charge. Pallbearers were Cloyce Stewart Earl Galloway Gregory Smith L C Willits Ray Redlinger and Max Donaldson. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.
In Philadelphia Roosevelt declared he will introduce a resolution in Congress to strip Harold Velde of the House Un American Activities Committee chair after Velde said he would probe churches. Roosevelt spoke at a Jefferson Jackson Day dinner to more than 2000 attendees.
KEOKUK, UP Three construction workers were free on bond after being charged with assault for a tavern brawl that left bartender Ralph Akers with a broken arm. Pp W Spidell 26 Sappington MO Lawrence Wegman 37 Sappington MO Arthur Zimbridge 50 St Louis were charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. Akers said the men dragged him from the tavern and deliberately broke his arm outside.
Iowa Attorney General Leo Hoegh urged strict liquor enforcement and local option end. Police and officials in Muscatine cooperated with a citywide halt on alcohol sales.
Lyle Wade of Wellman is named president of the Washington County Shriners club, with Hares Rugg as vice president Roy Durian as secretary and Dr T J Pease as treasurer. The unit is attached to Kaaba temple in Davenport and supports hospitals for crippled children across 16 U S facilities plus locations in Canada, Mexico and Hawaii. Over 24 000 children have received treatment since establishment. None are barred by race creed or nationality.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sherman’s funeral home with burial in Valley Cemetery. Rev Milo Phillips led the service and Mrs Antone Hotle was soloist. Pallbearers were Larry Sheet Jimmy Sheet Gary Knight and Larry Knight.
Two U S Air Force pilots described an unprovoked attack by Soviet built MIGs inside West Germany. One plane was shot down, Brown parachuted to safety, both men identified the aggressors as MIG-15s. The incident prompted a strong protest to Czechoslovakia.
Mrs William Kleopfer 83 died at her Kalona home. Born February 1 1870 she was a Klona native with parents Frank and Mary Stumpf. Funeral set 9 a m Friday at Holy Trinity Richmond with burial there. Rosary planned tonight and Thursday at home. Survived by son Ernest and daughter Ona Schaefer both of Kalona and siblings George Stumpf. Preceded in death by husband three brothers and a sister.
Plans for attending the 34th anniversary of the Odd Fellows lodge in the United States and scheduled to be held at Keota, April 25, were made at Tuesday evening's meeting here. Delegates to the convention will include Fred Kephart, John Been blossom, Karl Nicola and Howard Lins. Alternates named were Henry Wagenknecht, Gene Schnei der, G. A. Reinart and Doyle Jar rard. Work in the first degree will be conferred at next week's meeting here for candidates from Wapello. Charles Murdock, Don Beye and Maurice Libe served refreshments at the close of last night's meeting.

Rudolph Kuzekla of Omaha bound over on a 10 550 pound overload charge. Wilbur L. Rath charged with making a false gas tax refund statement. Donald Jhebour waived hearing and bound over on a drunk driving charge.
