Vesper Service Draws Large Crowd at United Presbyterian
A Sunday afternoon vesper service at the United Presbyterian Church drew a large attendance. The four oclock program, sponsored by the Fortnightly Club music department, featured Dr. George Kerr scripture reading Boyd White and Ralph Young in vocal items Rev. Walter Smith and Alice Hunter led a string quintet with Mrs Lyle Grove and Mrs George Fresh Waters at the piano. Mary Broghammer directed the high school mixed chorus with Helen Harvey and Mrs Milo Sorden soloing. The women’s chorus sang two numbers with Mrs Boyd White, and decor included pink carnations, greenery, lighted seven branch candelabra and palms.

Jespersen Named State Patrol Chief in Iowa
U S N Jespersen, 41, Maple Hill, was named chief of the Iowa highway patrol succeeding Clint Knee who died suddenly last week. Public Safety Commissioner Fred Wilkins announced the appointment after guidance from the attorney general's office that a patrol member must fill the post.

Tax Refund Cases To the Grand Jury
E M Davis and Chris P Bontrager appeared before Justice of the Peace J B Bovee on a charge of making a false affidavit for refunds from the state motor vehicle fund for non highway gasoline. They deposited bonds for appearance in district court. County Attorney John C Owen said the cases will be presented to a grand jury impaneled tomorrow. The cases stem from a complaint by the state treasurer. Both men are entitled to refunds but allegedly used wrong dates in computing the refund period. Jespersen has been acting superintendent of the motor vehicle department and has been on leave from the patrol since Jan 15, 1945. He joined the patrol in 1935, was promoted to sergeant in 1937, and in 1941 became a lieutenant, the rank held at the time of his leave.

Rukgaber Hardware Recall Marks Anniversary
Thirteen years ago today on March 11 1933 the Rukgaber Hardware store opened in Washington amid bank holidays. Walter Rukgaber faced early headaches as banks closed and change was scarce on opening day. The shop began in the Dewey building on the square and moved on December 5 1936 to a newly remodeled location on the square's north side.

Wheat for Japan Depends on Necessity Says MacArthur Request
March 11 Tokyo reports quote Maj. Gen. W F Marquat head of the SHAEF economic and scientific section saying MacArthur asked for American wheat for Japan on a basis of necessity. He denied the request was excessive and stated Washington’s view is its own business. He added information will be sent to agriculture department experts en route to Tokyo.
