M. D. Gibbs, longtime treasurer of the Alton public school, announces again his candidacy for the position after a 54 year tenure. He holds no other official post.
In a March 14 town election, incumbent John F. Hansen seeks reelection while his son Gilbert Hansen runs against him. Both were named in recent town caucuses, making the race a tightly linked family contest.
Charles P. Chase 70 of Clinton travels to Iowa City for the Iowa Engineering Society reunion. He will be the only member present who served when the society was organized and is a past president. Chase was among Iowa's first consulting engineers on municipal public works.
Iowa City Judge James P. Gaffney set March 21 for hearing injunction proceedings against the Iowa City school board. The case seeks to halt construction of a $725,000 high school in the Morningside Heights addition amid objections from taxpayers to the proposed silo.
Patrick Murphy, 72, of Tulsa Oklahoma, admitted theft before District Judge John P. Tinley. He was sentenced to a one year term in the Pottawattamie county jail after pleading guilty to larceny, citing twenty nine years in various prisons.
The Houser brothers C. M. and P. D. L. have farmed 205 acres a half mile south of Polk City for 70 years with no outside travel except short trips to Leon and Shenandoah in southern Iowa.
A 14 year old, Raymond Lunderen of Blue Earth Minnesota, drove a 1987 sedan stolen from Frank C. Pfeffer in Blue Earth to the Dubuque county sheriff's office and confessed to the theft, citing nagging conscience as the motive.
Shorty a Spitz dog at Burlington Iowa city police beat forms daily routine with Officer Fred Macholz. The dog accompanies him for eight hours each shift, reporting to the squad room at eight every morning and eagerly locating his officer if he is delayed.
Des Moines March 10 The Democratic state officials solidify plans for renomination in the June primary with state treasurer Leo Wegman of Carroll announcing his bid for a fourth term. Wegman, nearing 63, joined Auditor Charles W Storms of Fort Madison in seeking another four-year tenure after debate about a Senate race.
The Christmas Seal Committee reports 841.54 raised in Washington County from 104 county schools and city sales. After expenses of 52.92, 452.24 remains to support anti tuberculosis work, with 318.00 expected to grow to 1023.00 through federal matching funds and local contributions.
Paris March 10 Leon Blum socialist leader accepted the task to form a cabinet to pull France from a financial crisis as the franc fell to new lows and the Chautemps popular front government resigned after socialist opposition blocked emergency powers. Blum said he would rally the forces of the multitude with a powerful government likely excluding Communists.
An exhibit of 30 prize winning photographs from Iowa amateur photographers will be shown at the YMCA as part of the Washington County Camera Club meeting. The traveling University of Iowa Camera Club exhibit has received praise at prior shows and invites the public to view the pictures and join the open discussion. The meeting is scheduled for 156.
Charles W. Jackson returned from Peru Indiana with a car stolen in town last Thursday. Sheriff Harold M. Putnam accompanied him and is expected back with the man found with the car named George Robert Richmond of Turner Falls Massachusetts. Richmond will face charges of stealing the car in Washington per a warrant by County Attorney Richard A. Stewart.
G H Mangold completed a deal this morning to purchase the building he has occupied for three years in his car and radio service on North Town Avenue. He traded a vacant lot at 502 South 4th Avenue for the property. Plans are undecided but changes are contemplated, including a redecorated interior and a new radio display setup.
Des Moines March 10 Frank Stevens member of the Iowa board of control said he favored making an example of Hez Evetts a former Clarinda state hospital attendant who was dismissed after an attack on a patient Stevens conferred with County Attorney William A Glasgow who agreed to seek extradition of Evetts who is believed to be in Lincoln Nebraska

Des Moines reports Iowa motor vehicle records reveal many early autos remain licensed. Exhibitions, not daily use, characterize vehicles from 1901 to 1918 including a 1901 Elgin owned by Louis Calton Iowa City and a 1912 Jackson touring car registered by Henry Peitzmeier Cottonwood.
Des Moines March 10 The governor ordered a special audit of the Woodbury county emergency relief organization at state expense after a preliminary review showed shortages totaling 50000 dollars. The state auditor's office will begin the audit today as N S Genung administrator of relief returns to Sioux City for more information.
Washington announces the abandonment of 301 CCC camps with about 3,000 technical advisors to be dismissed. By fiscal year end 291 camps close, 10 more by October 31, and Iowa orders seven camps disbanded with roughly 34 tech staff let go by June 1.

Approximately 2500 people from across the country and abroad attended the Sherman hotel event featuring Emile Rohde Richard Martin and Mr Condos.

Dean Enfield of Kalona was sentenced to thirty days in the county jail by Justice of the Peace W. S. Eldridee for larceny of lumber and gasoline from the Nick Webber saw mill in Dutch Creek township. He was arrested after being seen stealing the items, with the report filed by deputy Stan Kiesey and Gilbert Morrow providing the tip.

Claude C. Reister was reelected chief of the city fire department at a meeting in the firemen's club room. All officers and drivers were reelected, pending city council approval at the April meeting. This marks the 26th year Reister has led the department. Other officers reelected were H. H. Reister first assistant chief John Westphal second assistant chief Harvey Meek secretary treasurer.
