Des Moines Lew Wallace, state motor vehicle chief, fixed May 1 as the deadline to purchase 1937 auto license plates. Ben Hatcher, Tul k county licensing head, estimates 6000 autos and 1000 trucks in the county still oper ating on old licenses.
Ottumwa soil loss from Des Moines River runoff amounted to about 1 740 000 tons between midnight Sunday and midnight Monday. Engineers and agronomists from the local CCC camp estimate this quantity could cover 800 acres one foot deep and warn that better rain could worsen erosion by roughly three times the current loss if fields were cultivated.
ESTHERVILLE Dr George G Griffith president of the Estherville Chamber of Commerce announced that articles of incorporation filed with the secretary of state at Des Moines assured Estherville of a packing plant to be built by the Tobin Co Rochester NY The buildings will cost about 180600 and construction will start as soon as the weather permits.
Voters in Ames chose a central site for a new senior high school with a budget around $300,000, rejecting the Ames board of education plan to locate the structure at the city’s northern edge. Dewayne Lowman, 4 year old son of Mr and Mrs Millard Lowman, died at Kossuth hospital from injuries after a rope failed while a stave silo was being taken down on Loren Brown farm two miles south of Algona. The silo blew down in strong wind during the operation.

Roosevelt meanwhile criticized the court in a nationwide radio address for usurping legislative powers and obstructing social and economic progress.
At a senate judiciary committee hearing Attorney General Cummings faced tough questions. He acknowledged a possible defect in Roosevelt court reform if future appointments skew conservative. He denied dictatorship risk and said future generations must solve their own problems. He warned enlarged court could bind decisions 8 to 7 rather than 5 to 4.
Des Moines reports the Iowa unemployment compensation commission will mail status report blanks to Iowa employers. The data will classify business type, size, and locations to determine tax applicability under the employment insurance act and aid in federal statistical classification. Public funds from 1936 payroll taxes support weekly benefits for unemployed workers.
Robert Keith Hagan infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hagan died at 8 this morning in Brighton. Born yesterday at 12:30 PM. A funeral service was conducted at the home this afternoon by Rev. W. R. Noland. Survived by his mother and father.
Dr. P L Etter the third district president will oversee the third district osteopathic meeting in Burlington with Dr A W Crow in attendance. The event positions Etter to guide proceedings and coordinate sessions.

A sitdown strike by 459 tunnel workers paralyzed the Chicago freight network under the loop. 50 motormen and 400 freight handlers held 62 miles of tracks and barricaded warehouses as relatives ferried food to strikers amid the six day taxicab strike. Chrysler in Detroit sought an injunction to halt the sitdown at plants in the Detroit area after a conference ended.
A new concrete floor is being laid in the G A R room of the court house basement. Jake and Charles Minick handle the work and new concrete baseboards are installed around the walls. The worn wooden floor is replaced to preserve the room used for meetings.
Twenty three farmers from this community joined visitors from Ottumwa Bloomfield Fairfield Keswick Keota Sigourney and other points west to Washington square and on to Davenport for a Farmall factory tour by International Harvester. Harry Roy and George Baker accompanied the group as the Chamber of Commerce hosts planned more trips and delays voting on windows continues through Friday.
