A strong quake struck Long Beach California last night shaking homes and rattling windows. Residents fled in fear but officials said downtown remained unaware of the event and there was no reported damage.
W D Milligan prominent attorney at Guthrie Center died at his home yesterday afternoon from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was sixty six, a 1891 University of Iowa Law School graduate, in practice since 1891. Funeral services set for Sunday at the Guthrie Center home. wife and two daughters Jessica and Aileen survive.
Bitter cold gripped Washington last night with a low of four below zero. Temperatures are moderating today as the cold eases and the overnight low fades from view.
In JLAREZ Mexico Felicitos Vasquez was fined 20 pesos after allegedly beating his nine year old son Felicitos unconscious with a horsewhip for refusing to drink liquor like a man.
Marian H. Baker of Bloomington Illinois assuming charge of the Washington County Welfare Office after a varied background in social service work. She previously served with the Social Service League in Maston Pennsylvania and held roles in Withamsburg Pennsylvania and Cleveland Ohio.
Mrs. A. Speer of Washington was unanimously elected historian of the Daughters of 1812 at a Iowa state meeting in Des Moines. She previously served as auditor and resigns to take the post after praise for genealogical work and cemetery locating with the adjutant general of Iowa.
Riverside Independent school district ballots will be uncluttered as no nomination papers were filed by ten days before the school election. Voters must nominate and elect candidates at the polls. Prospective candidates are Ir BE FF Wheelan for the 3 year term and Harold M Cress for the 2 year term.
Mrs. Mike Plymn of Wy man visited the city yesterday in town for undisclosed errands. No further details available.

Crawfordsville high school Cyclonettes defeated Denmark 47 to 22 to advance to the semifinals of the regional tournament at Hillsboro. They meet Hillsboro this afternoon with a strong chance to win the regional title as the event wraps up tonight.
The Harwood Shoe Store is remodel ing this week with shelving changes and a new partition at the rear to separate departments. The project also includes redecorating as carpenters finish. Moving shelves back eighteen inches creates more floor space and a larger appearance. This is the first remodeling job this year with more repairs anticipated as the season advances.
A Wellman man aged about 0 years died this morning at eleven oclock at the county home where he had lived for the last period. The body will be taken to Wellman for funeral services to be held there.
Funeral services for Christopher C. Watson who died yesterday at his West Chester home will be Sunday at two oclock at the Methodist church. Burial will follow in West Chester cemetery. He was born May 2, 1865 in Munice Indiana and survived by his widow eight children and one grandchild.
