Moscow reports a sensorial revolutionary plot against communist rule in the Donetz Basin with arrests claimed but names undisclosed. Officials say foreign financing and spies aided sabotage aimed at wrecking Donetz mines while keeping poorer mines running.
One member of the Washington board of education is to be elected next Monday afternoon. Candidates are Dr. F. Stutsman and DeLong. A district treasurer race features Clarence Logan to succeed Walter Conner. Election at city hall gym from noon to 7 pm with west door for voters. A large voter turnout is anticipated.
County Treasurer Marion George announces a bond issue of 100 600 dollars to be offered April 17 after a highway commission notice. Proceeds fund paving on road No 2 from Washington to Keota, with a total contract near 297 000 dollars. A third sale is not expected until late summer per state road board guidance.
John Leonard Whitfield, 43, killer of Cleveland policeman Dennis Griffin, scaled the Ohio prison wall to flee and was wounded by a posse. He was captured hours later after a gun battle at the home of guard Oren Hill and is listed near death in the penitentiary hospital. Hill denied complicity and Whitfield resisted arrest when surprised.
About fifty citizens gathered at city hall to authorize an investigation of electric light and power rates. Mayor Applegate named Fred Neiswanger chair and A F E Atchison secretary with a committee to study rates in similar towns and to confer with Iowa Southern Utilities. A report will follow after the committee gathers data and a subsequent meeting will be scheduled.
Clark Hancher known as Paddy, aged 33, died at his home 609 West Madison Street after months of illness. He was born January 1, 1895 in Cotter, son of D. S. and Mildred Hancher. Funeral services set for Monday at 2 pm at IL A Jones funeral home with Rev. A A Vinz officiating. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery.
At Mary Ann reef near Manomet Point the steamship Robert E. Lee ran aground. Of 168 aboard, 165 were landed by 3 p m. Coast guard boats ferried passengers including women and children first to Plymouth for onward transport to Boston. The crew was to be taken to Boston aboard the destroyer Red Wing.
William Edward Hickman and Wes Hunt were found guilty in Los Angeles of the Ivy Toms murder. The jury recommended life imprisonment for Hickman and leniency for Hunt. The verdict followed five hours and 47 minutes of deliberation by a six man six woman jury.
University High of Iowa City beat Winton 23 to 16 to reach the Class A final at Clinton in the district basketball tournament. They face Dysart, winner of Class P, for the district championship tonight. Ottumwa toppled Burlington 24 to 17 and meets Sewal this evening in Otumwa’s district tourney.
The obituary notes a man who moved from Vandalia NL fifteen years ago and married Ella Simmering on December 24 1919. He is survived by his widow parents siblings, and a brother killed in an auto accident near Letts six years prior. He worked as poultry caretaker and joined the Christian church early in life. He was a member of the local Moose lodge.
The heaviest snow blanket of the season covered New York and the eastern seaboard with high winds and blizzard conditions. Harbor traffic slowed and telegraph service on Long Island was briefly disrupted as the storm advanced Friday, following days of springlike weather before moving northeast.
Weather outlook for March 12 to March 17 shows much unsettled conditions across the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and the northern and central Great Plains. Occasional precipitation expected with temperatures mostly above normal, especially in northern areas.
Funeral services for Robert L. Cherry will be held Monday afternoon at 2 30 at the residence 803 North Avenue B and will be private. The family requests no flowers. Friends may call from nine o'clock to noon Monday. Mr Cherry died at 12 55 this afternoon at his home. He was seen in Ohio May 9 1850 making him nearly seventy eight years of age. He was a son of William and Martha Saville Cherry.
Wesley Hubbs of Richland was held for the grand jury after a preliminary hearing before Justice W. E. Baner in Brighton. Bond set at 1000. Hubbs allegedly sought to sell 22 Rhode Island Red chickens to Joe Buzzard and is suspected in other county thefts. Sheriff Denison urges owners to come forward with identifiable marks to claim their poultry.
A hill slide in Santos Brazil struck Santa Casa Misericordia hospital and adjacent homes. Early reports say about 200 people were buried. The hospital roof collapsed under a massive rock as the city fire department raced to clear debris and rescue victims.
Washington March 10 radio bill action delayed in the house as other business pushed consideration to late afternoon. A Monday vote is now expected after the three hours of general debate. If not completed and signed by Thursday midnight the authority reverts from the federal radio commission to the secretary of commerce Hoover.
A community reward of 390 is offered for the arrest and detention of J V Williams linked to the thefts of Rock Island railway drafts. He was last reported breaking into Beaufort Missouri Rock Island depot on February 27 and allegedly cashing drafts by small purchases and money orders. Williams is about 33, five feet ten inches, 170 pounds, black hair blue eyes, medium complexion, often wears horn rimmed glasses and a pipe and travels by car. He previously served time in a Virginia state penitentiary.
Washington and Davenport high schools host a dual debate with college judges from Parson s College Fairfield and Augustana College Rock Island. Merritt McDaniel and Ruth Wilson defend the affirmative on federal education department plan while Lamoyne Jones James McCollister and Nellie Wylie Nora Warner lead the negative. Chariton Keswick debate also on the same evening with a district championship at stake.
Thirty men were trapped as flames and gas filled the La Aurora silver mine near Teziutlan Puebla State. Rescue workers faced dangerous conditions with fifty rescuers overcoming gas pockets as a special relief train departed from Pachuca toward the mine.
Fred S. Downing secretary of the local civil service board announces open competitive examination under the U S civil service commission for postal clerk and carrier at the Washington post office. Receipt of applications closes April 11. Applications on prescribed form with instructions may be obtained from Mr. Downing at the post office. Applicants should file before closing business on April 11. Competition date will be stated in admission cards mailed after the close of receipts.
A young man stole the Irv Gallagher car on Washington Street and drove about 200 miles before abandoning it near Oskaloosa. Sheriff Denison and the owner recovered the car, after farmers found it along a country road. A false lead in Alicia delayed identification. The car remained in good condition.
Frank E. Johnston living three miles north of Cotter was struck by passenger train No. 29 near Cotter station. Surgeons amputated his right hand except for the thumb and forefinger. He held a team when frightened by the locomotive and was knocked against the engine. He was taken to Washington county hospital. his condition later reported as good.
In Des Moines March 10 the house passed an amendment allowing the department of justice, after executive council adoption, to file suit to test bond validity before any sale. The vote was 93 to 12. The chamber then moved toward full bill consideration and cleared amendments prior to 8 pm.
Washington county board of supervisors awarded a $27,612 contract to Iowa Bridge Co of Des Moines for 42 culverts, about $5,000 below the engineer estimate. Eight bids competed. work spread across English River Lime Creek Iowa Highland Jackson Oregon Washington Franklin Dutch Creek Crawford Marion and Brighton townships.
