4 H'ers aiming to show market beef at fall events after Sept 15 must reweigh between March 1 and March 15 or risk weighing in three additional beef animals. After weigh in, submit scale tickets to the Washington County Extension Office. Ek-Sar-Ben and American Royal are cited fall shows requiring the March weigh in, per Julia Gamon.
The Old Creamery Theatre Company stages John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men at 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 10 in the Community Center. Also tonight That Old Gang of Mime is presented. Tickets remain for three performances at the box office. Washington County Cattlemen hold their annual business meeting Thursday at 6:30 PM at Captain's Table. all members and prospective members invited. meal free for paid members.
Mid Prairie officials publish Kindergarten Round-Up dates for Kalona West Chester Wellman and Washington Township attendance centers. Parents must bring birth date verification to the meetings scheduled March 29 31 April 1 and April 5 at 1 30 p m.
Washington firemen were called out four times Tuesday and early today but reported no major damage in three blazes. A grass fire on South Iowa Avenue started by burning trash, another at East Fourth at Virgil Earls home, a canceled call, and a later fire at Dale Worhies place 72 miles southwest rekindled in a timber area requiring about two hours to soak the area.
Washington County Treasurer Wallace L. Fagen urges property owners to pay the second half real estate and personal property taxes for 1976 by April 1 to avoid 1% per month penalties. Special assessments for street projects and sewer work in Wellman Kalona are due too. The annual tax sale for delinquents occurs in May and the sale is scheduled for the third Monday in June. Fagen notes collections are normal but the rush will hit late March as deadlines approach.
Increasing cloudiness tonight with a 30 percent chance of rain Thursday afternoon. Tonight’s low in the mid 40s. Thursday will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers by afternoon and a high in the upper 60s. Winds will be light and southerly tonight.
President Carter said a future peace in the Middle East may require substantial Israeli withdrawal from territory occupied since 1967, while stressing Israel's survival must come first. He distinguished defense lines from recognized borders and discussed international forces potentially manning lines. Carter also announced travel loosening to Cuba and other nations, a $1.5 billion jobs program, troop withdrawal from Korea, and cautious limits on disarmament talks with the Soviet Union.
Washington Community Schools will display student artwork at the Washington Public Library for National Youth Art Month in March. A small display is already at the Squire Shoppe. Carlton Bump, art teacher, will announce viewing dates as the library display expands.
Marcella Greiner sues her brother in law Carl and his wife Alice Greiner in district court for 35000 alleging severe and permanent injuries from a March 8 1975 party at the defendants home when she slipped on wax laid on the basement floor for dancing. Howard Greiner her husband attended as a client. The petition accuses negligent waxing and failure to exercise care.
Washington High School junior class officers announce a fundraising drive taking orders for six tree varieties. The class of 1978 will canvass the Washington area selling Red Maple Sugar Maple Redbud Weeping Willow Tulip Tree and White Dogwood. Trees ship via United Parcel Service at four to six feet tall with a live guarantee through July 1 and free replacements until survival. Each tree costs four dollars plus one dollar shipping per order. Community support funds upcoming class activities.
Kirkwood Community College announces spring adult education courses with most sessions at Washington junior and senior high buildings. Pre registration through Jean Swift or Slama Bauer for macrame. some courses priced for seniors at $1 with eight tuition paying students. Courses cover Microwave Cooking Gun Safety and Conservation Beginning Guitar Advanced Macrame Drug Administration Sewing Stocks and Bonds Basic Carpentry Art New You Grooming Tennis Golf for Beginners and farm, soil, wind, and solar topics with varied instructors and schedules.
The Washington County Mini-Bus plans a March 25 to 27 charter to Chicago with Candle Light heater, McCormick Place Spring Flower Show, Chinatown tour, Old Chicago visit, and free time. Stay at the Essex Inn on Michigan Avenue. 47 places available. reserve by March 16 at 653-285. Other trips in March include Shiloh on the 11th, Iowa City and Cedar Rapids on the 14th, Mt. Pleasant and Burlington on the 18th, and Iowa City and Cedar Rapids again on the 21st.
Vandals hit The Game Room at 100 East Main Street by smashing two plate glass windows with bricks around 12:30 a.m. The spree raises this week’s damages to about 3000 dollars. Manager Jack Eaton says two windows were broken Monday night and replaced Tuesday. Police are investigating and Eaton has doubled his reward offer to 100 dollars for information.
The Washington Fire Department relies on 30 volunteers earning four dollars hourly with four full time drivers. Chiefs Lew McFadden Tom Tanner and Bob Zager lead a civic minded force voting on new members aged 21 to 35 with approval from the mayor. The unit covers about 136 square miles across five townships and trains at state fire schools in Ames while balancing work and duty in harsh winter conditions.
