In a surprise move the Senate approved amendments to Johnson’s tax package. Republican Sen. Winston L. Prouty of Vermont won a long-sought Social Security rider extending benefits to about 1.8 million people aged 70 and over not currently covered.
Washington reports Defense Secretary McNamara said allied forces killed about 8000 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops since 1966. He noted 1600 enemy deaths this week. Senate testimony cited easing supply problems and other lawmakers discussed poverty, FDA drug testing probes, college tax credits, and state taxation concerns.
A sword once carried by Rear Admiral George Collier Remey, the first U S Navy admiral born west of the Mississippi, vanished from a locked glass case in the Burlington Public Library historical society room. Iowa trade mission member Robert Barry, 44, of Danbury and part owner of an auto dealership, suffered a heart attack Tuesday in Hong Kong and was listed in critical condition. Gov. Hughes remained in Hong Kong as the mission continued toward Bangkok with about 100 members. The delegation wound up a five day Hong Kong stop and urged U.S. businessmen to shed laziness to compete abroad.
Gov. Warren Knowles led Wisconsin leaders to Fairfield Iowa to study the Parsons plan as a self supporting college model. About 72 people flew to Ottumwa and toured housing classrooms and labs while Knowles discussed enrolling projections and a dual track for technical education. He stressed evaluating economies and quality education amid Wisconsin’s rising student numbers and echoed no political motive to the visit.
