Parents of all eighth grade students are invited to a 7 p.m. meeting at Washington Junior High School to discuss next year ninth grade registration while counselors answer scheduling questions. Washington YMCA reports a $25,700 membership goal reached for 1976, campaign officials say with thanks to volunteers.
Washington Jaycees meet Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Day law office building to plan the YMCA Service Club Olympics. Russ Williams chairs the Jaycee phase and nominations will be made for the April 13 election. Easter Egg Hunt is set for April 17 with talks on senior citizen and cerebral palsy fund raising and a kite flying contest.
Widespread strikes by hundreds of thousands of workers swept northern Spain including Bilbao and San Sebastian in protest of four demonstrators shot by police in Vitoria. Underground left groups called the action to demand a public trial for the killings amid clashes with police.
An out of court settlement in a Washington civil lawsuit over a 1972 soda bottle incident ended the trial process. The Chalupas claimed Mrs. Chalupa lost vision after a bottle cap exploded from a Pepsi Cola bottle. Settlement amount not disclosed, sources say about 75000 dollars.
Jimmy Carter remained the top choice for Iowa Democrats at county conventions over the weekend as uncommitted delegates held decisive influence on the state’s 47 convention delegates.
Linda Peiffer, 17, of Washington was crowned Washington County Pork Queen for 1976 at the 26th annual County Pork Producers and Porkettes banquet at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The event drew about 550 attendees and featured awards, fundraising updates, and remarks by local officials and guests.
Daryl Owens of Ainsworth owned the top carcass pig at the Washington County Market Hog Show with a 230 pound barrow that had 5.4 square inches loin eye and 0.83 inch backfat. Jim Ledger placed second on hoof and in the carcass. The 240 pound second place barrow showed a 7.52 square inch loin eye and 1.2 inch backfat.
Woodward Granger Keokuk Indianola junior high group led by Gary McCurdy was named outstanding junior high at the fifth Washington Jazz Festival held Saturday. High school winners include Woodward Granger Keokuk Indianola Aquinas and Ottumwa with top honors in classes A AA AAA. Lone Washington acts hosted with Joe Farrell guest clinician and 65 musicians earned Outstanding Musician Certificates.

U S Senator Dick Clark announces a mobile office visit in Washington County on Saturday March 13. The event runs 9 30 to 11 30 a m and 2 to 4 p m at the city hall parking lot in Washington. Residents may meet staff and discuss issues or any government concerns.
Jimmy Carter led in delegates at Washington County Democratic meeting with 12 county delegates pledged to him while Senator Morris Udall earned the remaining five. The district and state convention delegates were decided Saturday night.
Strategy targets maximum delegates for Jackson at district level while Linn County Udall delegates lag two short of the 15 percent threshold. The outcome hinges on uncommitted delegates who will decide who advances to the district convention and ultimately the national convention in July.
Washington city police report a new wave of citizen band radio thefts with four units stolen from cars in the K of C Hall lot during a county park banquet and two more taken on East Washington Street. Authorities urge owners to remove radios from brackets and store them in trunks when parked. Police also probe vandalism after headlights and windows were broken on school buses near the high school Saturday night.
Roger Duane Kauffman, 22, died when his Kalona home burned through the roof after a neighbor reported the blaze around 3 a.m. A nearby auto repair shop was slightly damaged. The cause is undetermined. Services are planned for Wednesday afternoon with viewing after 7 p.m. Monday at Peterseim Funeral Chapel. A memorial fund is set up. Kauffman, born July 6 1953 in Iowa City, was a 1971 Mid-Prairie graduate and owner of Kalona Volkswagen. He was a member of Kalona Mennonite Church. Surviving are his parents, three brothers, two sisters, and a grandfather.
The Maurice Crawford farm in Washington County will host the 1977 Farm Progress Show from September 27 to 29. The event, dubbed the World’s Fair of Agriculture, will cover over 1,000 acres with more than 300 exhibitors showcasing the latest harvest and tillage equipment. The show is sponsored by Wallaces Farmer and travels Iowa every third year, with Prairie Farmer handling Illinois and Indiana.
