Sugar cement lumber and oil duties are the flashpoints with votes shifting to favor increases. The struggle risks a prolonged debate and possible filibuster as demands for further votes grow.
Two separate fire calls were logged in Washington today on Game Street. In the morning, Roy Teets residence at 522 North Second Avenue suffered a small roof fire with minor shingles burned. In the afternoon, police reported a grass fire on a lot between Frank Macon and E. R. Norton homes on South Second Avenue.
An inter church cabinet event at the Y after church Sunday evening will feature Dr FF W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church as speaker with special music. The gathering marks the final havny hour for the big year by local youth and community groups.

The world day of prayer for missions was observed yesterday afternoon at the Baptist church. About seventy five women attended and representatives from all churches helped. The program, led by Miss Carolyn Hamilton, featured songs and several short talks and prayers. Next year the United Presbyterian church women will lead the program.
The A M E church singers performed last evening at Pleasant Hill church. A few last minute changes affected smoothness but the audience response reached 15 dollars, signaling strong appreciation. The church thanks Mr Caldwell and his workers for their help in bringing the concert together.
President Hoover and the Commerce and Labor secretaries forecast improvement within 60 days after studying current figures. They urge citizens to start spring cleanup jobs to reduce unemployment, noting the worst effects should pass soon. Police raid a Melrose Park farmhouse described as a bomb factory by detectives arresting 11 men, many tied to the Genna gang. William Greenlaigh 34 confessed killing Peter Donkersloot 72 in Pershing Iowa, later wounded himself in jail by slashing his throat with a razor. He told authorities he struck the old man with a poker in anger and said the motive unknown others questioned about ties to the recluse. Investigators pursued further motive beyond momentary rage as Greenlaigh lay near death from self-inflicted injury.
Weather outlook for Mar 10 to 15 covers Upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and the northern and central Great Plains. Expect a precipitation period by mid to late week with temperatures largely near or above normal.
Police found a young woman's burned body in a cabin ruin on Deep Lake shore near Lake Villa Illinois. The body was a blackened mass with head arms and legs missing, suggesting dismemberment before the fire to conceal a murder by gangsters known to haunt the area in winter.
The funeral of Marion David Work who died yesterday at 12:34 PM at the family home on East Washington Street will be held Sunday at three o'clock at the residence. Rev. A. N. Porter of Crawfordsville and Rev. D. Chalmers Fulton of the Washington United Presbyterian Church will officiate. Work, a Washington native, was a former city council member and lifelong farmer. He is survived by his wife Ella Simerman, two brothers John M. of Milwaukee and Harry of Washington, and a reared niece Maude Simerman Lease. He was a Republican focused on good government.
John Allen spends several weeks in Excelsior Springs Missouri, staying for a period of recuperation and rest.
William Newell 17 of Des Moines attempted a bank robbery at Winterset Savings Bank late yesterday. He demanded money after being armed at 3 45 pm and fled with about 2000 dollars. Cornered in a woodshed, he was shot by Sheriff John K Sawyer as he fired in a last escape bid. He survived with wounds to the stomach and was taken to Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines.
Miss Edna Bell aged 57 died at 11 AM at Washington county hospital after pneumonia and complications from a cold. Born February 3, 1873 in Boone Iowa she lived in St. Paul and Marion before moving to Washington in 1922. She leaves her mother and three brothers Dexter Cedar Rapids Frank Seattle and Wilder Washington. Funeral services Sunday at 4 30 PM at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev A W Henke with burial in Marion.
Mrs Clifford Thorne and Mrs George Morrison traveled to Des Moines to spend the day enjoying the sights and activities available in the city.
Kirkwood Illinois March 8 UP nine people were seriously hurt when two busses carrying about 50 basketball fans to Galesburg from a Burliington Iowa tournament crashed after a curve. One passenger William Tucker was grievously burned. Fire and smoke hindered rescue as both buses burned.
A six story office apartment building in Duluth Minnesota burned last night trapping 35 families. Firemen recovered three victims including a 70 year old woman and two children, Helen Todd aged seven and Barbara Todd five months, who perished in the flames. Eight others were injured as crews searched for more victims.

Washington dispatch reports Associate Justice Edward T. Sanford died at age 68 after a sudden uremic attack. He collapsed while in a dentist chair and never regained consciousness after being brought home to Connecticut Avenue. Sanford had been appointed by President Harding in 1923 after a career as assistant attorney general in 1907 and a Tennessee district judge. Funeral plans call for Knoxville burial.
Preliminary drafts of a political program to end the U S military occupation of Haiti are with the Hoover investigating commission. Opposition leaders including Justin Sam Damien student strike figure George Leger Seymour Pradel Antoine Rigal and Pierre Hudicour have been given more time to revise their demands for discussion next week.
The federal farm board temporarily lost control of 103000 bushels of grain valued at 120000 stored at Continental Grain in Minneapolis. Investigators say Continental hypothecated ownership for loans. Kellogg of Farmers' National Grain Corp may pursue court action to recover control.
