Area legislators Forrest Schwengels and Keith Dunton will travel to Washington on Saturday to meet with the Chamber of Commerce legislative committee at 9 a.m. at Winga's Cafe and address the public from 10 a.m. to noon at the Chamber office.
Bill Whittenberg and Shari Williams won the third annual Optimist Club oratorical contest at the junior high building and will advance to the zone contest in Iris Court Mt. Pleasant on April 2. Runners-up were Joe Mineart and Vicky Rae. third and fourth in the girls division were Toni Turnipseed and Becky Thompson. Judges were Al Kinzler Bob Cox and George Krogmeier.
A three story Bargain Galore building in Muscatine was totally destroyed by a fire. Employee John Young lit a cigar in a restroom igniting the blaze. Young was hospitalized in fair condition with burns. Officials speculated paint thinner or a gas leak may have sparked the fire.
Marilyn Andeway has been named Keokuk County coordinator for the Area Agency on Aging. She has served as news editor and office manager of the Richland Clarion and previously worked for the Washington Evening Journal. The appointment takes effect March 16 with an office in Sigourney.
Clifford Conklin, chairman of the Washington County Board of Supervisors, will not seek re election this year. He will complete ten years on the board and step down January 1. Ralph Marshall, recently appointed to fill a vacancy, will have his name on the ballot and must seek voter approval to finish the remaining two years. John Patterson's term does not expire for two more years. Conklin said he plans to take it a little easier and that he fulfilled a ten year limit he set.
Washington County Hospital welcomed a $7,000 coronary care system with two bedside monitor units and a central display, plus a defibrillator and EKG printer. Dr Sum Tam says it speeds treatment within the first seven hours after a heart attack and improves care for critically ill patients, with staff training planned.
Mostly sunny this afternoon with highs in the low to mid 50s. Tonight colder with lows in the low 40s as clouds thicken and a chance of rain develops. Friday expect a chance of thundershowers, highs in the 50s, with easterly winds 10 to 20 mph and rain chances 20 percent tonight and 60 percent Friday.
The Grimheads Red Cross drive chair announces the 1974 annual fund and membership push in Washington County. Red Cross month is marked nationwide in March with solicitors visiting rural areas and county towns excluding Kalona and Washington to collect funds for servicemen families disaster safety and hospital services while noting SBI act related training and SSI assistance. Local chairmen include Mrs Harold Kueneman Ainsworth Mrs Luton Schooley Brighton Mrs Ruthe Fletcher Crawfordsville Mrs Florence Hamilton Riverside Mr Roger Borup Wellman and Mrs Robert Stout West Chester with township coordinators listed.
Iowa Senate passed a 46 to 2 vote approving a 47 million package for teachers' cost of living raises and foundation funding. The measure adds about 27 million above normal growth needs, funds a 6.5 percent salary increase, and directs 20 million from state funds plus local taxes. Debate centered on enrollment based funding and sliding scale.
In Dix Hills New York three kidnapers abducted 8 year old John Calzadilla as he walked home from school. A woman with two men lured him into a black car near his home. A 10 year old companion who walked with John described the incident to police. No ransom was reported. The year old boy was not identified.
The kidnapped boy is the son of Michael Calzadilla, 38, co-owner of Irving Tire Co., a major Long Island tire retailer. Suffolk County detectives say one kidnapper phoned Calzadilla within 25 minutes and again within 90 minutes, with no ransom demands and a promise of further contact from the caller.
A Watergate grand jury charged six including John Ehrlichman Charles Colson and G Gordon Liddy in the 1971 Ellsberg psychiatrist office break in. Cuban Americans Bernard Barker Eugenio Martinez Felipe DeDiego also indicted for violating the doctor patient privacy. Ehrlichman faces additional FBI false statement and grand jury counts. Liddy faces two counts for refusing to testify to Congress.
