Jury Name Hearing for Communists Proceeds in New York
Federal Judge Harold K Medina refused to dismiss the conspiracy indictment against 11 U S communist leaders and ordered jury selection to begin. The defense argued President Truman's “traitor” remark prejudiced the trial and sought the judge's disqualification, both motions denied. The defendants face up to 15 years and fines up to 19 000 if convicted. Foster and Dennis issued a statement defending their stance and arguing opposition to war should not be treason.
