Daniel Dodson, 32, was ticketed for obstructing traffic after he stepped in front of his estranged wife Opal Dodson’s car to talk to her while she drove to work. Police report the incident occurred Tuesday in Detroit.
The House opened a sharp partisan fight over farm legislation centered on soil bank benefits for Midwestern corn. Democrats urge a broader plan including six more crops while Republicans warn of a $1 billion expansion in costs. The clash pits city Democrats against rural interests as votes loom.
The Washington Industrial Corporation will hold its annual stockholders meeting at the VFW hall in Washington at 7 50 p m. Directors for three-year terms will be elected. Progress reports and other business are planned. Proxies urged for absent stockholders. secretary Ralph Marshall will assist 6 45 to 7 30 p m. Keith Vetter serves as president.
In West Chester on Monday 268 pupils from West Chester Franklin Center New Haven Dutch Creek Center and Wellston districts received the Patch TB test. Volunteer workers included Frances Bauer Maurine Gordon Shirley Timmins Marianne Brinning Mabel Gordon Marjorie McKinstry Pat Dawson Ernestine Kiesey Ada Kileese Harriet Orr Bea Niffenegger Helen Stewart assisted by nurses Mrs John Whittaker Mrs Meint Koehler Mrs John Phieger Miss Ethel Gregg. Dr K L McGuire will read results Friday at West Chester. The same volunteers and nurses will assist with follow up testing.
The Harvard Men's Glee Club will give a concert in Washington on April 3. The event was approved by the Washington's Men's Club, with ticket sales to be organized by Y's Men under committee leadership. Charles Luckenbill, son of local residents, is a member of the group. The concert, planned for the Washington High School gymnasium, will be the group’s only area appearance.
Israel's Knesset formally backed Premier Ben Gurion's order to pull Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip and Gulf of Aqaba area with broad confidence votes. Reports said a pullout could begin within 24 hours amid casualties from Gaza ambushes and a Gaza curfew.
House leaders move to adopt the Senate version of President Eisenhower's Middle East resolution after White House backing. Unanimous consent is sought to switch to the Senate language, seen as satisfactory to the President and Secretary Dulles. The measure aims to shield the region from Soviet influence. The Senate approved 72 to 19.
Mrs. Robert Kurtz received a CARE letter expressing gratitude for a $200 gift from Washington. Franklin Irving, CARE service division director, thanks contributors who won Mrs. Kurtz’s auctioned figurine, with all proceeds benefiting CARE.
Rev. Nancy J. Nichols announces the Washington County American Red Cross annual campaign in March. Lawrence Miksch of Washington Iowa led a delegation of about 100 Iowa Farm Bureau leaders in backing the American Farm Bureau testimony for new corn legislation before planting time. They lobbied senators and representatives, urged a two plan system with price supports and soil bank options, and toured Washington area offices as part of the push.
Iowa officials say improper passing or failure to yield caused 327 highway deaths last year. Lt. Leonard Sims told law enforcement officers that new cars hide yellow lines near no passing zones. He noted longer yellow lines are being painted to warn drivers earlier. Continued enforcement and education have reduced violations.
Chaplain Howard Blandau of Eldora Iowa Boys Training School addressed the Baptist Men Brotherhood, urging parents to lead by example through church and Sunday School. He cited low attendance among Eldora’s 350 boys aged ten to eighteen and stated Christ is the answer, not psychology.
Washington lawmakers from drought hit regions challenge President Eisenhower on cost sharing for a federal relief program. Senate leans toward House drought bill without state contribution, while administration urges prompt adoption. Senator Aiken notes uncertainty on when legislation reaches Capitol Hill. The President seeks 25 percent state funding and state administration of relief with a deferred grazing provision.
Funeral services were held at Oak Park Wellman for Don Topping 25 who died suddenly in Oak Park Hospital. Burial will be in Wellman Cemetery with Dr E M Buehler and Rev Don Bissinger in charge. He was born in Wellman and educated there and Iowa Wesleyan College and the naval academy at Annapolis. He worked for Western Electric in Chicago and married Carol Smith of New York on Sept 1 1955. Survivors include his wife his mother Mrs Dorothy Topping of Wellman and two brothers William of Dows Iowa and Robert a Coe College student.
Elias Rudolph 65 of Rubio died at 1 30 a m today of a heart attack at his Rubio home. He was a lifelong Rubio farmer before retiring and moving here two years ago. Funeral services set for Friday at Rubio Friends Church with Rev Phillip Hoff man in charge. Burial in Valley Cemetery, Gould Funeral Home of Richland handling arrangements. Survived by widow Nina Collins, a step son Eldon Collins, a sister Mrs Omer Long, two brothers Ernest and P W Rudolph, and 10 nieces and nephews.
Ten high school FFA chapters competed at Keota with winners advancing to the district contest in Washington on March 16. Represented schools include Williamsburg Marengo Belle Plaine Grinnell Brooklyn Keota Sully Montezuma Wellman and Washington.
A DC7 on a New York to Dallas flight suffered a 1400 pound propeller and engine nacelle blow through the cabin top at 14 000 feet over Fisherville Tennessee. Capt L T Hansard with 17 000 hours of flight time safely landed the plane in Memphis after a five minute glide. Passengers including Nat Charney reported a calm descent and quick landing despite injuries and damage.
Cold air covered most of Iowa with 10 to 15 degree drops statewide. Mason City recorded 12 degrees as the coldest spot while Keokuk saw a 31 degree low. Light snow fell across the state with Mason City reporting an inch. Snow was to end by afternoon and roads were mostly normal except in Des Moines where some spots were icy. Forecast temps tonight near 10 north to mid 20s south. Thursday highs expected in the 30s north and around 40 south.
The County Republican Women's club will take an informal trip to the Iowa Legislature in Des Moines on Tuesday March 19. Women may join by car or rides provided. briefing with Senator Carl Anderson and Representative Richard Stephens at 9 30 AM before the 10 AM session, lunch with the lawmakers, then attend the afternoon session and return home. Des Moines Iowa Gov Herschell Loveless urges longer or more frequent legislative sessions beyond the current 100 day biennial frame. He questions if annual sessions may be the answer to better gauge the state's needs.

Kenneth Patterson of the Mid-Prairie board of education was named chairman of the district site selection committee. The first meeting is Friday at 7 30 pm in Wellman High School. Other members include Wayne Norman Albert Yoder Henry Berger Keith Stewart Ford Skola and John Knotek.
Judge Frank Bechly announced the March term district court assignments. Non jury hearings set for March 11 at 10 a.m. include Floyd Willson trust and several civil cases. Jury sessions begin March 18 at 2 p.m. with State of Iowa cases and related civil actions lining up for April 1 at 2 p.m.
