The Punjab province in British India saw days of Hindu Muslim rioting with Lahore hit by violent clashes. Official sources pegged 159 killed as rioters, police, and military fought in Lahore and across the region amid protests over a Muslim league proposal for a provincial ministry.
At Trinity Lutheran church the junior choir offered its second appearance with Saviour, When in Dust to Thee a Lenten hymn from an old Spanish melody. Directed by Mrs J H Baiderwieden the choir includes Frances Anderson Marilyn Anderson Kathryn Phillips Jack Anderson Jerry Dempsey William Webster Donald Frakes Gene Yerner and Ray Tweete. They also practice for Palm Sunday Easter and the Missouri Synod birthday service on April 27.

Des Moines reports wets and drys clamor over a liquor by the drink bill as Iowa lawmakers pause during a mid session. The measure would let cities vote to permit sale by the drink, provoking tavern owners and restaurateurs to seek broader leniency while groups like the WCTU oppose it. The Iowa House will decide after next Monday’s session start.

SOUTH ST PAUL MINN MARCH 6 UP One of the nation s largest meat depots was closed today as 3500 CIO livestock handlers struck the South St Paul union stockyards and approximately 5000 CHO workers refused to cross picket lines. The walkout paralyzed the packing center as all major packing houses except Cudahy were closed. Picket lines formed before dawn while clerical and maintenance workers entered. South St Paul s stockyards rank among the nation s largest in salable receipts and daily head counts.
The United States charged Russia with unjustified interference in Hungary by attempting to sustain a communist dictatorship. The State Department note expressed concern over Hungary's political crisis and said recent developments threaten the people’s right to choose their government.

Karl Little was chosen first assistant and George Baker second assistant, with Mike Crone as secretary and treasurer. John Custer and Harry Miller were reelected as truck drivers. the officers will be reported to the city council for approval at the first council meeting of April.
Yesterday was moving day for Tait's radio and appliance store now located in the Wilson building at 118 North Iowa avenue five doors north of the former site. Remodeling created a show room and sales room as well as spaces for radio and washer repairs. The business has operated on North Iowa avenue for two and a half years, the former location just north of the National Bank of Washington.
The Supreme Court upholds contempt convictions of John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers in the coast strike case. Lewis's $106,000 fine stands. the union’s $3,500,000 fine is cut to $700,000 if it fully complies with lower court orders within five days of the mandate. Justice Vinson writes for the majority. Justices Murphy and Rutledge dissent. The truce expiration remains March 31.
The bill, introduced by House Post Office Committee Chairman Edward H. Rees, seeks higher postal rates to reduce the Post Office deficit in fiscal 1948. The department says efficiency gains are needed as rates would drop losses from 287 million dollars to 114 million.
