Des Moines reports that sugar rationing coupons will reach over two million Iowans by March end. The War Ration Book One distribution is underway with March 17 to 20 tentatively set for sugar ration registration. Elementary schools statewide will serve as centers for distributing rationing certificates.
In Des Moines two Iowa farm group reps told the state code commission that farm lands pay too large a share of public school costs. They cite 97.97 percent of funds raised by real property taxes and push for school funding from non property tax sources. Roger Keming of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and Victor Felter of Indianola spoke, representing agricultural program committees.
James Allen 45, superintendent of motor vehicle registration for the Iowa Department of Public Safety, died at Iowa Methodist Hospital from a ruptured appendix. He entered the hospital February 22. Appointed to the state office in May 1939 after managing Gov. Wilson’s campaign the previous fall.
Spirit Lake's Helen Hope Hendricks among 27 U S students awarded fellowships for one year of study in Latin American universities. Hendricks, a University of Iowa graduate, will study literature at the University of Chile in Santiago.
Silly Leroy Kirtsinger, year old son of Mr and Mrs Roy Kirtsinger of Waterloo died after a bean lodged in his bronchial tube. The child reportedly placed the bean in his mouth and inhaled it deeply. An operation failed to save his life.
Des Moines Iowa Mrs Bertram P Holst Boone conservation chairman of the Iowa Federation of Women's clubs urged club women to plant at least one acre of seedlings in each community for forests of the future at the spring council meeting held at Hotel Fort Des Moines She said forests provide raw material for future ships and called for more parks and recreational areas in all Iowa communities.

President Roosevelt signed a record 32.76 billion dollar appropriation boosting wartime funding to about 85 billion since Pearl Harbor and 145 billion since defense began in 1940. Crawfordsville March 4 Mrs Jeanette Strain 96 longtime resident died last night at 11 in her son's home after weeks of illness. Born Aug 24 1845 she spent life in Crawfordsville area. She married William Strain in 1866 and was active in the Methodist church. Survived by son Charles M Strain of Crawfordsville and several grandchildren. funeral arranged with A Jones Washington.
The Ways and Means Committee, by unanimous vote, reports favorably a bill raising the national debt limit from 60 to 125 billion dollars. Secretary Morgenthau urged immediate action to finance the war effort, noting the current debt was close to the limit and that April bond issues would likely exceed it.
Proceedings reveal the fined man had used false identity. He admitted his name was not Marsten. real name is Sam Moore, and the case exposed the alias after justice court steps.

Thomas J. Mooney, once jailed for the 1916 Preparedness Day bombing case, died at St. Luke's hospital after abdominal surgery. Farm Bureau Women of County held an all day meeting in the Farm Bureau office with 100 percent attendance of township leaders in home demonstration work. Attendees included Mrs. Merle Twinam Crawford Township and Mrs. Rollin Brown Sigourney, with discussion on organization, township meetings, library, health and school programs and attitudes toward sons entering service. The gathering covered farm labor, drafting, and support for the Food for Freedom program.

Frances Rybachek Beranek died at 7 a.m. in Riverside at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mary Teas. Born 1851 in Bohemia, she lived 62 years in Riverside and was the oldest Riverside resident. Funeral plans were not yet announced. She was a St. Mary’s Catholic church member with five children, five grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
Ten year old pupil at Lincoln school John Cupp reports two robins in a tree at 531 South Avenue C. They appear to seek a new home for the 1942 season and are believed to be the first robins seen in Washington this spring.
An accident on Highway 34 eight miles west of Burlington involved two youths who were taken to Burlington hospital for treatment.

Burlington March 6 UP Lieutenant General William S. Knudsen began an Army probe into the Iowa ordnance plant explosion as the death toll rose to 21. Clarence Wixon 44 of Farmington NL was the latest casualty. five men remain missing. The tour included Senator Clyde L. Herring Brig Generals McFarland Campbell and Day & Zimmerman official Johnstone. Johnstone defended housekeeping practices while Burbridge safety engineer said his Washington trip was to present concerns and he was discharged for reasons beyond the trip.
KEOTA March 6 Funeral arranged by Marsh funeral home for Keota native Lawrence CG Greiner killed in Burlington arms plant explosion Tuesday night. Born May 10, 1912 he would be 30 this spring. He lived in Keokuk county most of his life except one year near Yarmouth. He married Flora McAvoy December 15, 1941 in Memphis Missouri and they lived in a trailer near the shell loading plant. His daughter lives with her maternal grandmother in Fairfield. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs John W Greiner of Keota, two brothers Reynold and Cyrel, and two sisters Mrs Ralph Peiffer of Brighton and Mrs Clem Chalupa of Washington.
