Three Perish in Iowa Home Fires
United Press reports that three people died in Iowa fires including Mrs. Marcellus Westmeier and her infant son in a Maquoketa area blaze, and Mrs. Mary Banning perished in a Rock Rapids home fire. Death of Daniel Gates 77 Resting in Washington County
Daniel Gates 77 a life long resident of Washington County died today at Washington County Hospital at 12 30 PM after five months of declining health and serious illness since Tuesday. He was a retired farmer living south of Washington on Route two. Funeral services are set for Sunday at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Fred K Miller presiding. Burial will follow in Downey Town cemetery. He was born March 16 1870 in Dark County Ohio and moved to Cedar County Iowa at age five before settling in Washington County in 1918. He married Ruth Ella Holloway in 1893 who died in 1924. Survivors include son Leslie Gates and grandsons Robert L Gates and Kimball A Gates, great grandson Daniel J Gates, and brother Hiram K Gates. Two brothers precede him in death. An unrelated note mentions board member election conjecture and Aztec beliefs about a red dog burning with a corpse transferring sins.
