Edward M. Beckwith, recently named principal keeper at Auburn prison, was stabbed fatally by inmate Anthony Mortellito during the noon mess hall meal. Mortellito, serving 20 years to life from Westchester County, had been at Auburn since 1922 after transfer from Sing Sing. The murder occurred amid the trial of convict Max Becker for killing Beckwiths predecessor. No riot followed as inmates returned to cells.
