A Cleveland suburb tragedy as a basement fire at the North Collinwood school traps panicked pupils. Only about eighty escape. interior doors and limited fire escapes hindered exits. Recovery of the dead and injured continues as officials assess the toll and remaining missing.
Eyewitness janitor Herter recalls pulling the alarm as smoke poured from the front stairs. Firemen and police rushed to the blaze as parents, including Mrs. Spring, begged for aid. Flames trapped pupils and teachers. many bodies burned beyond recognition with few identifications possible.
The blaze tore through a three story building starved by fire then three floors collapsed. Firemen and railroad workers saved bodies and a nearby rail shop served as a morgue. within hours most victims were found lined up and identified by clothing or trinkets amid the ruins.
In a grim scene at a temporary morgue the identification of 165 victims continues. Parents and relatives move along the line of corpses as ambulances unload. The first identification comes when a mother recognizes shoes on two young sons, amid scorched bodies and mournful cries.
Cambridge March 5 The discovery of a new planet or satellite is announced by Kiel to Harvard observatory. The object was observed eight nights by Melotte in Greenwich and is visible in a large telescope. Harvard astronomers think the object may be a satellite.
