Double murder charge eyed in Davenport knife slaying
A rural Davenport man, Donald W. McCollom, 38, faced an open murder charge for the knife killing of his wife Pauline Mary McCollom and the fatal shooting of her brother Richard Lee Jurgensen Thursday night. The incident occurred in the McCollom home as their five children aged 1 to 15 were in the house. McCollom allegedly stabbed his wife during a divorce dispute, then shot Jurgensen, and later attempted to shoot himself. He surrendered later to Muscatine County authorities. The victims were Pauline age 33 and Richard age 24, from Madrid, Iowa.

Tornado Toll Rises Across Mississippi and Alabama
In Mississippi and Alabama a deadly tornado outbreak left at least 58 dead and about 450 injured. Search teams began a light-sweep of central Mississippi as 65 miles of destruction across four counties raised fears of a higher toll. Alabama and Georgia also faced floods and additional twisters with evacuations and power outages reported.

Bombing targets Hanoi Haiphong rail line in North Viet Nam
U S Navy and Air Force jets struck the Hanoi Haiphong rail corridor in the Red River Valley for the first time since the resumption of bombing. The Thursday night attack hit Yen Be and Phu Tho areas northwest of Hanoi and followed reports of a large buildup of supplies at Dien Bien Phu. In the south, U S troops near Tay Ninh 50 miles northwest of Saigon captured enough food and supplies to feed 1,000 Communist troops for a month as Viet Cong abandoned a supply camp and fled.

Iowa study shows high misassignment among teachers
Dr. Perley O. Brunsvold analyzed 1964-65 teaching assignments of 8,749 Iowa high school teachers in 452 schools. He found 63.69 percent taught entirely within their undergraduate major, while more than one-third taught outside their major. The report urges better college counseling, cooperation between institutions and districts, and stronger certification enforcement to reduce misassignment.
