Senator Spooner announces resignation effective May 1 after sixteen years in the U S Senate. He will resume law practice and remains a Wisconsin citizen, with Vice President Fairbanks among those informed. In Wisconsin politics, a crowded field forms to fill the unexpired term as contenders emerge.
Milwaukee reports Washington announced United States Senator John C. Spooner of Wisconsin had sent his resignation to Governor James C. Davidson to take effect May 1. Davidson, contacted by telephone, said he had not received it and doubted its truth. The legislature would elect a successor to serve the remainder of Spooner’s term ending March 4, 1909. The governor anticipated possible candidates including Looper and Esch who had run against La Follette.
London dispatch reports the resignation as an accomplished fact with Gov. Swettenham to leave the island soon. New York dispatch notes Dr. Evans recalled during the Thaw trial, Jer ome ends cross examination at noon, Dr. Charles G. Wagner is called as the alienist.
An explosion in the Holden mine of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western at North Taylor injures eight, six dying later and two possibly dying. a dozen others with minor burns. In Kingston Woodward mine two men die and five are badly burned in a gas explosion. several injured are foreigners working with safety lamps.
Surveyors in Gaylord Michigan examine the right of way for a proposed railroad from Alpena to Frankfort. The route would pass Hillman Atlanta Johannesburg Gaylord and several towns to the southwest. The western terminus remains undecided between Frankfort and Manistee.
A brutal two day storm across Southern Mississippi and Louisiana brings deadly lightning, flash floods, and wide destruction. Mississippi reports at least one fatality with widespread damage. Meridian sees over five inches of rain swelling Souwashe Creek. McNeill bridges washed away. Philadelphia reports a tornado hitting small buildings.
President Roosevelt's youngest son Archie contracted diphtheria and is isolated in the southeast room of the White House. Officials say he is not seriously ill and under care.

Henry R. Platt, attorney for Joseph Leiter, says there is a small chance he will pay a fine of 200 to 500 dollars for alleged mining law violations. Leiter was found guilty Friday by a Franklin County jury in Benton Illinois. The jury was seven to five for acquittal but Leiter consented to a verdict on one count out of sixty two. The other counts were dismissed and the case may go to the appellate court.
Milo Adams a leading western Wyoming attorney was found dead in bed at his Sundance home after returning from Casper. He leaves a wife and four children. Adams had moved to Sundance in 1884 and was a Republican political figure with substantial wealth. his former home was Wisconsin. Mrs Adams was reputed the handsomest woman in Wyoming.
A United States mail wagon with three pouches was stolen from in front of the Stock Exchange building at LaSalle and Washington streets. Two pouches contained miscellaneous mail and the third held registered mail. The incident occurred in Chicago on March 4.
Boston March 4 The suit in New Hampshire to compel the Christian Science church trustees to fully account for finances with Mrs Mary G Eddy will be fought to a finish. The bill is returnable April 2 at Concord. Advocate General Frank S Streeter of Concord represents Mrs Eddy and says the case will be defended on all issues. He denies the charge that Eddy is mentally irrational and physically enfeebled. The suit is brought by her nephew George W Baker of Bangor Maine as principal plaintiff.
Formal papers in insanity proceedings were served on George Rhodius at Circle Park hotel. Judge Allen postponed the trial to determine if Rhodius responds to the treatment he is receiving. Mrs Rhodius claimed a common law marriage of nine years and said she had not run her Pear street resort since their union.
A massive dynamite blast at the Pennsylvania railroad contractors' plant in Home stead New Jersey injures four seriously and several with minor injuries. George Johnson a switchman is missing and believed killed. A house was destroyed and 400 windows shattered as men searched the vicinity for survivors.
A blast severely damaged about six homes and Geug ernatd's silk factory. The seriously injured were taken to a hospital with expected full recovery. The dynamite belonged to Bradley & Sons contractors, under g construction on the Pennsylvania railroad North River tunnel linking Jersey and New York. It was stored in a frame building.
George Cadrick shot Nicholas Mason at a South Cochran street boarding house after a Friday quarrel. Mason died at the scene. Cadrick, shot himself as he fled and is hospitalized likely not to survive. Mason, about 40 and married, had descended the stairs for breakfast when the attack began.
A twelve hour sleet storm in LaCrosse Wisconsin collapses telegraph wires halting east and north freight traffic while passenger trains run slowly and with difficulty.

An Arbor report states the wandering man picked up in Manchester two weeks ago named Willard Stearns or Adrian as his guardian. Stearns says the man is Joseph Swartout, a Civil War veteran who receives a pension.
Baron Budberg ex chief of the Esthonian nobility and council of empire member was set upon by six unknown men while driving near his country seat in Reval. Two servants accompanied him. one killed and the other wounded. Assailants rifled the dead men's pockets and escaped.
H Bowyer McDonald long time chief clerk and parliamentarian of the United States Senate has died of liver cancer in Washington March 4. He followed a family line in official work having served as journal clerk and chief clerk of the Senate, roles once held by his father and grandfather.
