Evening art class alumni are urged to contact Carlton Bump of Washington High School to participate in a two day April 2 and 3 reunion and exhibit. He seeks work from former high school students and from adults who studied in his many classes over 25 years.
The Washington County Democratic convention is set for Saturday March 6 at 7 30 p m in the county courthouse courtroom. Delegates will be elected to district and state conventions along with five district committee members and the adoption of a county platform and rules.
The Washington Concert Association ended its membership drive with a sold out outcome. Mrs. Kay Stewart and Mrs. Virginia Tschantz announced not to accept more memberships for 1976 77. They thanked members and workers and noted the new Community Center auditorium and air conditioned theater will seat attendees.
The Iowa Farm Bureau reports total membership at 137,944, exceeding the 137,127 goal. Ninety nine of one hundred county bureaus meet their targets, with Dubuque lagging but likely to reach its goal before year end. Dean Kleckner notes seven straight years of hitting goals and eight years of growth.
Weather forecast shows rain or thundershowers tonight and Thursday with a high in the mid to upper 30s and lows in the mid 30s. Northeast winds 10 to 20 mph and precipitation probability at 80 percent.
Betty Eden will serve as chairman of the annual Washington County Red Cross fund campaign during March. The chapter assists eight of ten families with services such as disaster communication, planning, hospital volunteer work, VA Hospital patient aids, and veterans benefits claims. It emphasizes emergency training, ambulance and water safety courses, first aid, and life saving skills for community readiness.
The House Judiciary Committee killed a strong gun control bill aimed at banning cheap concealable handguns. Supporters condemned the move as crass lobbying and said the measure is dead for the year after a 17 to 16 vote to return it to the crime subcommittee.
Senator Henry Jackson edges nine contenders in Massachusetts while Jimmy Carter wins the Vermont contest. Ford defeats Reagan in both states, with Udall, Wallace and Harris also winning symbolic support as the 1976 Democratic race begins to take shape.》
Mozambique President Samora Machel announced the border with Rhodesia is closed and the nation is on a war footing. He vowed the Mozambique Liberation Army would defeat the aggressor as Rhodesian troops and aircraft attacked border settlements.
Donald A. Lenz of Creston becomes Installation and Maintenance Supervisor for General Telephone Company in Washington. He assumed the role February 16 and will report to Robert B. Soland in Sigourney. Lenz, a four year U S Air Force veteran, joined G T in 1973 after college and plans to move with his wife Judith and their son to the Washington area.
The Iowa Senate took up a bill to ban smoking in public buildings and limit smoking areas in offices and waiting rooms. Senators debated rights of smokers and non-smokers, rejected a doctors office provision, and defeated amendments including a ban on all retail smoking and a spittoon requirement.
Black Hawk County voters approved a $2.75 million bond issue for renovation and expansion of the county care facility. Unofficial totals showed 97 percent yes, well above the 60 percent required. The project will add space for 90 residents and upgrade the building to meet state requirements.
Washington Bicentennial plans move forward as YMCA committee reports progress on a time capsule pedestal for 1976. Designers Carlton Bump and Don Hanson finalize the concrete shell and bust housing with wraps for insignia copies and a signature scroll. A vote in April will decide if the capsule remains for 50 or 100 years as funds from signatures pay for busts and other Fourth of July features.
Blair House Foundation officials report ongoing improvements at the historic building with carpenters inside and outside visible changes. Volunteers and students from Art Service Club Office Education Students Jr High groups led by Cindy Moore, and Jacque Mings at Iowa Wesleyan College contributed painting scraping and plaster work. Heat and air conditioning are planned for spring and sidewalks landscaping will follow weather permitting with FFA involvement under Doug Hofbauer to restore the Victorian mansion once used as city hall.
