Iowa City will host the University of Iowa ninth annual invitational forensic tournament from Thursday to Saturday. Sixteen top speech colleges will compete in debates oratory discussion and extempore speaking with after-dinner talks. The top 25 percent of participants will be announced at the end of the three days.
Des Moines reports say Pine farmers have no official representation on the national defense advisory commission after Chester Davis’s resignation as agricultural representative in Washington last week. Indications suggest the vacancy may not be filled, with Davis having long felt defense council members were unsympathetic to farmer protections in the program.
MOUNT VERNON The Stanwood trapper Forrest Tenley farms in summer and traps in winter. He has shot 21 foxes and bagged 19 raccoons this season. His trap line stretches nearly 10 miles and he sometimes walks 25 miles to track a fox.
Fire damaged the Frankel's Inc. store in Ottumwa, owned by Joseph Frankel and managed by Herman L. Feldman. The smoke ruined most stock while flames were confined to the basement. Fire Chief Sam Russell, with A. Labherdin from Blaze, investigated the origin of the blaze.
Iowa State College zoology student Jessop B. Low reports that the so called sea gulls nest and raise young in Iowa. Last year three gull nests were found in Barringer's Slough Lake Township Clay County marking the first Gull nests reported in the state.
Funds raised at University of Iowa hospital Iowa City to buy 1000 diapers for English children as part of the Bundles for Britain drive. Seven cents buys cloth for one diaper with hemming done at the hospital.
Central Iowa Fair association completed a sale of 16000 dollars in bonds to Bay Grandstand, financing a complete renovation for the 1941 fair. A new steel and cement grandstand will seat 4550, with the brandstand covering 18144 square feet for exhibits and offices.
Minnie Schultz, 89, was found dead in her Burlington home. Coroner R O Giles ruled the death accidental from an open jet in a gas stove, with the woman dead about two days. Survived by a Burlington son and a Waterloo son and daughter.
Sunday afternoon the Golden State Limited westbound struck an automobile at the North Marion avenue crossing. Driver Floyd Wieland of a mile and a half southwest of town escaped by jumping from the car before impact. the vehicle was crushed but Wieland was uninjured and alone.
Chicago march 3 Boy a sixteen year old ran in front of an elevated train and was killed. His action indirectly caused a collision of two trains injuring 25 to 20 people. A westbound train struck him. an eastbound train halted nearby to help and a following express on the eastbound track struck the rear car. The wooden car shattered wood and glass injured most passengers.
Funeral services were held in Chicago for Rosa Falk, mother of Joe Falk. She died Saturday afternoon from a heart ailment after a major operation two weeks earlier. She would have turned 75 on March 7 and is survived by sons Joe Fred and other Falk siblings, a sister, and a brother. Joe Falk and wife were en route home.
Many March farm migrations around Washington finished though some farmers still move. Soft roads hinder progress and a freeze may roughen dirt paths tonight. Most moves began in February or January and reflect average annual activity with tenants relocating and some due to farm purchases. Several farmers lack new places and must make temporary arrangements while seeking steady yearlong homes.
National defense topics dominated the recent national Junior College association meeting in Chicago as Dean Harland Mead of Washington Junior College returned Saturday night. He noted a 20 percent rise in pilot training enrollment nationwide, boosting the American junior college outlook, and said Washington’s program meets requirements and is poised to train civilian pilots.

In Maryville Missouri W R Tilson heard a sneeze from his chair and the old clock on his mantle, which had not run for six months, suddenly began ticking again. The moment occurred as Tilson sneezed, breaking the long silence of the antique timepiece.

Dr. William Rotzler of the United Presbyterian board of American missions spoke at the United Presbyterian church on the enduring influence of home missions. He noted church growth outpacing population, 60 percent of Americans now church members, and 75 percent of congregations aided by the home mission board. He warned of 10 000 towns without churches and 30 000 without a resident pastor, plus two million migrants and 13 million Negroes needing church contact. He described mission work among Negroes and mountaineers in the South.

Granville Clay Humston aged 69 died at 11 45 p m in Washington County Hospital after a week there and five weeks bedfast. Funeral 2 30 p m Tuesday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev Carl W Klein of St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. Born August 19 1871 in Washington County, lived in county except four years in Missouri. Survived by widow Emma Hering and children Roy Grant Harold Humston of Washington and Hazel Kessel of Fairfield, twin sister Mrs Fred Werner of Washington. One brother J H Humston and a sister Mrs Emma McElroy are deceased.
Sunday morning the Farmers Mutual fire truck was called to Verdi where a roof fire at the Joe Coledo home was largely controlled upon arrival. The fire caused only a small roof hole and minor overall damage.
In Iowa City on March 2 a group of townspeople and university students planned to join a picket of the Iowa City Coach company amid a dispute with the local drivers union. Fifteen drivers and mechanics struck three weeks ago seeking higher wages while owner Henry Negus kept operations running despite the picketing. The demonstrators belong to the Town council for the preservation of peace in the democracies.
Captain Eddie Rickenbacker remained critically ill in an Atlanta hospital under an oxygen tent as he fought to recover from injuries suffered in a recent eastern airlines plane crash. Doctors reported his condition worsened since Wednesday.

Sheriff H M Putnam investigates Wayne Cummings of Keota found beside No 92 two miles east of town Saturday night. Injuries from a blunt instrument, not serious. Cummings says he drank with two strangers in a Washington tavern then to Columbus Junction for whiskey. Companions identified as Merle Dawson and Earl Campbell of Washington. Dawson located, Campbell not yet found. About seven dollars missing from Cummings’ pockets. No charges filed as of noon today.
Senator Carter Glass of Virginia urged using cloture to speed passage of the British aid bill. Democratic leader Alben Barkley hinted at seeking a limited time arrangement. Glass said the talking has gone on too long as the Senate enters its third week.
Nearly 4,000 Wilmington Building Trades members walked out at Camp Davis on the coast, halting work on the $18 million anti-aircraft firing range. Carpenters led the action with picket lines at ten plant entrances while about 500 demonstrators marched. About 16,000 workers are employed on the project.
Des Moines reports colder weather ending milder spell as temps fall to zero in the north and ten above in the south. Snow flurries hit eastern Iowa while rains moved through the state. sleet and snow in the northeast with light snow in Sioux City and rain at Montezuma Iowa City and Davenport. Temperatures ran about 10 degrees above normal.
Des Moines reports a measure ready for House introduction to require vaccination for all pupils entering Iowa schools for the first time. Religious objectors would be exempt. Supporters say smallpox has been nearly stamped out where such laws exist and describe the disease as a dark cloud over the state.
Post master J H Fuller received from a Greek woman two uncashed money orders totaling 206 dollars issued by the Ashland post office 34 years ago. She apparently just learned of their value.
