Reports from Washington state Taft’s condition remains critical but slight progress from the morning bulletin. Doctors note arteriosclerosis risks, while public concern and support grow as the former president nears the end of his long career.
March weather remains March-like with high wind and dust in circulation. Saturday reached seven degrees above zero and this morning's temperature stood at eleven as the mercury rises.
Premier Andrew Tardieu forms a new cabinet and will depart for London to resume leadership of the French delegation to the five power naval conference. Other French delegates will follow once Tardieu secures a confidence vote, allowing the talks to resume where they left off after his government fell on February 17.
John D. Buckley 79 longtime Washington resident died at 8 05 this morning at his home 421 West Second street after a two week illness He had lived on West Second for 42 years born November 23 1850 in Ireland he came to America in 1869 settled in Washington in 1874 to work on the Rock Island railway later serving as engineer in charge of the Washington water works until his 1920 retirement He is survived by wife Mary Jane Cross and seven children George Buckley New York city Mrs Paul Dede Boston Miss Catherine Buckley Cincinnati Miss Mable a Washington high school teacher Frank Chicago Raymond New York Harold Detroit one sister Mrs Charles Schuster Delafield Wis He was a member of St James Catholic church and the Knights of Columbus Funeral plans set for Wednesday.
Washington March 3 U P The senate opened its second week of 11 hour sessions on the Smoot Hawley tariff bill. Senator Shortridge proposed a seven cent a pound duty on long staple cotton. Senator Wagner charged administration concealment of unemployment facts. Senator Lafollette warned of a new red scare and urged unemployment focus. Senator Nye sought a 25000 inquiry into wheat price declines. The judiciary committee deferred questions on prohibition enforcement. The house met briefly to honor Rep James A Hughes of West Virginia who died.
Senator Nye introduces a resolution to probe grain traders, alleging a conspiracy to defeat federal farm board aims. He cites a Chicago conference shaking cooperative confidence and notes a telegram from M W Thatcher backing Legge policies. Contemplates cotton and other staples.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at nine at St James Church under Rev Joseph O Donnell. Burial follows at Elm Grove cemetery. The body is with A Jones funeral home where friends may pay respects tonight or tomorrow. Two rosary services are announced by Holy Name Society and the K C Council at Jones chapel.
The Western Air Express airliner missing since Sunday February 16 was located about 20 miles north of Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino mountains. Rancher J. T. Barber reported he neared the wreckage within a mile but saw no signs of life through field glasses. The Folker aircraft carried pilot James E. Coles co pilot Albert Berber and steward John Slaton on a Kingman Arizona to Los Angeles flight.
In 11 days the U T Acme Lady prize cow produced 15 320 pounds of milk and 508 pounds of butter for the Knoxville show.
In Minneapolis on March 3 a blaze at the Swedish hospital forced evacuation of 40 hysterical patients. Nurses used fire escapes and exits to move patients while orderlies aided with mattresses and calming efforts. Within 30 minutes the old building was consumed and patients were relocated to the new wing through a tunnel and to the basement.
Washington Albia and Burlington end tied for first after three wins and one loss each. Washington beat Muscatine 24 to 20 while Burlington outscored Albia 46 to 25. A decision on state representation may require a playoff at Mason City.
Washington finished second in a junior college girls swimming meet at the Burlington Y M C A featuring Burlington Muscatine and Washington. Only three Washington swimmers Margarita Williams Priscilla Morrison and Esther Elgar competed under coach Miss Roma Clemans.
The United Mine Workers faces a regional split with John L. Lewis opposing Harry Fishwick in Illinois. Two conventions are planned March 10 to decide control of union properties and funds worth millions, with AFL involvement and ongoing legal battles.
In Washington, Dr Charles Barker shared five happiness rules based on twenty years of experience including service to President Taft. He urged cheerful outlook, acceptance of one’s place, wholehearted work, kindness to others, and childlike faith in God at a Union service at United Presbyterian Church with full audience and church music.
Washington March 8 The government won the first step toward a legality ruling on prosecuting liquor buyers for conspiracy under the Volstead act. The Supreme Court granted a petition for formal review of a circuit court decision that barred Alfred Morr a New York banker from being prosecuted for conspiracy over a telephoned order to a Philadelphia bootlegger. The case could be argued before the court in months and decided before term ends in June. The court aims to expedite criminal cases.
Fires struck Washington on Saturday and Sunday, damaging two residences but sparing occupants. At 743 East Main Street W A Anderson owned the home occupied by B F Bostwick and family, with attic and roof damage and insured loss. The morning blaze at 303 Fast Jefferson Street where Al Cantoni lives caused only minor roof damage and a few burned shingles.
An appeal for armament reduction signed by over 1200 prominent Americans is with the London naval conference delegates. The appeal urges adherence to Kellogg Briand and joint settlement of disputes, noting Hoover’s promise to match reductions. Eight governors and 212 college presidents signed, signaling broad public support.
This morning he spoke to students at the Washington junior college high school and junior high about what education is and isn’t. At noon he addressed the Rotary club on Rotary By-Products. At 2:30 Dr. Barker spoke to women at the high school, then at 7:30 he addressed men at the high school. Admission is free for all, and all men are invited. He is described as an unusually interesting and entertaining speaker.
Sigourney's independent basketball team captured the Iowa state title with a 33-21 win over Council Bluffs independents in the championship. Gold medals were awarded to each player and $159 in cash went to the team, as Toledo independents finished third with a 59-48 win over Bath independents.
In Washington on March 3 Senator Wagner of New York urged a senate probe of unemployment. He cited wage declines of 15 percent from October to February and criticized the administration for concealing facts while seeking Red Cross aid and veteran measures amid growing unemployment.
