Washington's Y's Men’s club presents Agatha Christie mystery Ten Little Indians at the high school auditorium. Rehearsals ongoing with a fresh cast and crew for three performances this week, featuring lighting and sound effects to heighten suspense. Reserved seats on sale at Osincup Drug Store with early buyers urged to exchange tickets.
Officers of VFW Post No. 2808 announced the annual magazine subscription drive ended successfully. Proceeds funded sick room equipment and hospital beds with delivery to Mrs. Dave McGaffey in Washington for temporary use at no charge. First magazine copies expected in eight weeks.
Fire discovered early Sunday at the Shamrock Inn in Ainsworth confined to the building interior despite high winds. The blaze started in a shed adjoining the main structure and ruined the interior and interior water damage. The inn is owned by Mrs. Louelle Schnoebelen and partially insured. The Ainsworth fire department was alerted around 3 59 am.
Mrs B F Bostwick came home Sunday after a five week visit with Mrs Stella Boller and Ruth in Phoenix Arizona.
At the United Nations Vishinsky announced he will present Moscow's policy on Korea in the General Assembly Political Committee session this afternoon. He aims to respond to Lodge Jr and defend the Kremlin line amid the U S challenge regarding 10 alleged facts.
Hong Kong reports Izzy. Communist papers publish alleged confessions of Col Frank Schwable and Maj Roy Bley tied to germ warfare claims in Korea. U N Far East commander Gen Mark Clark denounces the charges as baseless and notes torture and drug use hints. Reproductions show Schwable and Bley with microphones.
In Tehran, police and troops cleared Parliament Square with tear gas after clashes between Nationalists and Communists. One follower of Mossadegh was killed amid fresh violence as mobs claimed Mossadegh had won. Sherman tanks guarded the city after two days of riots and demonstrations.
Elizabeth Brockway Darrow a native of Highland Township and artist died suddenly at her grandson Madison Tomfelds home near Bloomfield Sunday evening. Born July 25 1866 she studied at Eastern Iowa Normal and the State University of Iowa. Survived by daughter Mrs Tomfeld grandson Madison Tomfeld and granddaughter Marion Tomfeld. Services at Fairbanks home Muscatine Wednesday at 2 50 p m with burial at Grandview.
Davenport police said two youths confessed to safe burglaries totaling 2960. Dan Reidy admitted involvement in two burglaries one in Davenport and one in Rock Island Illinois while David Hanighan confessed to the Rock Island theft. Officers found 1690 at Reidy and 1270 at Hanighan’s homes.
Glass fibers are drawn today in filaments so fine that a single glass marble will yield a thread nearly 100 miles long.
State Senator Carl Anderson and Representative Harry Ramseyer back a senate bill to grant a private corporation a franchise to build and operate a four lane toll highway across Iowa. The plan allows bond financing and tax relief during debt repayment without state cost obligation.
In Marshallton a 27 year old man Leslie Play from Gilman Illinois was described as a crazy drunk after he shot at three deputies. Eight officers from two counties responded after a disturbance report at a Gilman cafe. Play fired a rifle and then a .410 shotgun at deputies outside his home before surrendering after tear gas was used.
Karle Libe addressed the Washington Rotary Club at noon describing his travels in Honduras. He noted the country's primitiveness and aging history, cited transportation as a major need, and recalled shipping their car by rail due to lack of roads.
The regular monthly board meeting of the Washington Ys Men's club scheduled for 8 o'clock this evening has been cancelled. Other plans will be announced later.
A dairy industry spokesman urged Congress that surplus butter bought by the Agriculture Department should be sold to the armed forces at prices competitive with margarine. He argued it is wasteful for government stock to burden troops with imitation butter while stores accumulate excess dairy supplies.
Washington report that Roger Lyons chief of Voice of Americas religious desk faced Senate testimony accusing him of atheism. Lyons rebutted the claim calling it false and irresponsible and affirmed his faith while stressing religious and moral programming goals.

Gen. James A. Van Fleet, retiring Eighth Army commander in Korea, arrives in Washington for a hero’s welcome and talks on Far Eastern policy. He will dine with President Eisenhower and leaders then face Senate and House inquiries into his reported belief that UN forces in Korea can launch an offensive to break the deadlock when ordered.
Washington dispatch says the Republicans are steadily trimming the 2,509,000 federal workers inherited from Democrats. No mass firings yet, but holdovers remain in some agencies while new hiring is slowed and several thousand jobs in control agencies are already cut.
A powerful snowstorm swept the nation bringing 5 inches to Lemont and 2 inches to Des Moines with more in the south turning to freezing drizzle. Winds reached 30 to 40 mph, many roads snow packed and slippery, and at least 10 deaths were linked to the storm.
Funeral services for Mrs. D C Griggs were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Jones funeral home with Dr C R Reed in charge. Pallbearers were Ralph Herr Glen Knapp Glen Fuhr William Graf Robert Roberts Harlan O Loughlin. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.
After a White House meeting with President Eisenhower, House Speaker Martin and Senate Republican Leader Taft projected passage of the Hawaiian statehood and tidelands bills within about three weeks. They also anticipated a cabinet level upgrade for the Federal Security Agency and discussed a three member Presidential Council of Economic Advisers.
Official 1952 Iowa Master Corn Growers results show Ameal Chabal of Riverside with the highest yield per acre at 157.12 bushels. Marvin Matthes of Wellman route two is second at 156.50, with Ed Chabal, Spencer Reed, and Leonard Tindal among other tenants posting strong yields. State record holder E. W. Bartine of Clemens tops the state with 169.98 bushels per acre.
A marriage license was issued to Joseph Misus of Wichita Kansas and Alta Lee Smith of the same area. The document notes the couples names and residence as the basis for the license.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson lifted a year old ban on imports of Canadian meats and livestock. Canada is declared free of the out and mouth disease that led to the embargo after a slaughter program since February 1963.
Mrs. John W. Cherry, production chairman of the county American Red Cross, seeks additional women or groups to sew and knit to complete the current quota for hospitalized servicemen and veterans. Items include bedlats for the U S Air Force Hospital in Illinois, layettes for Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, bedpan covers for the VA Hospital in Omaha, and a few socks and beanies. Materials can be picked up at the Red Cross office.
In the House of Commons Churchill stated he would be willing to meet with President Eisenhower and Premier Stalin at any time on terms laid down by Eisenhower. He implied interest in joining any discussions between Eisenhower and Stalin to advance world peace.
Governor William S. Beardsley expressed faith in Chief R. W. Nebergall as friction grows within the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He noted complaints from 14 agents about inefficiency and underused equipment while stressing no further action is anticipated after talks with lawmakers Gus Kuester and Dee Mallonee.
