Gasoline ration coupons and certificates worth an estimated two million gallons were stolen in a Dubuque ration board office burglary. A vault was opened with a diamond-point tool, exposing B and C coupon rolls and gasoline certificates while food certificates remained untouched.
February marketings in interior towns and southern Minnesota reached a record for the month, with receipts totaling 1,333,800 head. Comparisons show December and January near 1,000,000 plus, while a year ago February saw 877,600. Midwest markets offered 2.8 million head in February, more than last year but shy of December and January peaks.
Clair A Williams 56 of Danville Iowa filed nomination papers for the Democratic nomination for congress from the first district. He is active in Des Moines county Farm Bureau circles, a past president and secretary treasurer of its service company. He is a hog raiser with 140 acres of orchard land.
The federal housing authority awarded a $179,500 contract to B. W M. Handler Construction Co. of Chicago to build 80 temporary war worker dwellings in Newton Iowa. Demountable units from Kingsford Heights Kingsbury Indiana will be relocated. Construction starts March 1 and is to be completed within 60 days.
Ames, Dennis Blume of Tulare South Dakota a 24 year old chemistry graduate research worker at Iowa State College died from injuries after an explosion in the college chemistry laboratory hours earlier. An unidentified lab worker said Blume had just removed a tube when the blast occurred about 447 p m causing a door to be blown from its hinges and damage to a desk. The cause of the explosion was not determined.
Des Moines reports a sharp rise in infectious diseases with 2,03 measles and 1,106 scarlet fever cases in the first two months. Measles exceed any six year January February totals while scarlet fever numbers reach the highest since 1938.
OPA inspectors will conduct a nationwide spot check the week of March 1 to ensure gas coupons are properly endorsed. Noncompliance may lead to loss of ration books, with notices sent to the holder and possible hearings to revoke rations.
Frank McFarlane began his own business in Havre on March 1, 1894 with Coulter. He later moved to West Chester, ran a driving business, farmed near Welman, and since 1926 has led the Farmers Cooperative store elevator and coal yard in Washington. Now 77, he keeps a firm, growing operation and serves on the Washington city council for five years.
Mrs. Howard Crozier received word that Calvin Gormley formerly of Crawfordsville, died yesterday at his home in Wenatchee Washington. He was 80, born and reared in Crawfordsville and had moved to the west coast many years ago.

Reports from London and neutral capitals indicate Bulgaria seeks armistice terms from the United States and Britain while Finland moves toward an early settlement. Moscow confirms preliminary talks with Finland and Sofia eyes presenting its case to the Allies as Bulgarian officials travel toward Turkey.
Washington report says Senator Guy M. Gillette of Iowa pressured President Roosevelt over a federal judge appointment in northern Iowa. Mitchell of Fort Dodge sought the post, but Gillette opposed a backroom runaround and backed Henry W. Graven of Mason City for the seat, with fallout expected soon.
Dr. Jay Field, in the second lecture of the international understanding series, urged cooperation between nations to prevent a third world war. He cited stark inequalities in Latin America, praised the current good neighbor policy, and urged tactful U.S. handling of relations with Argentina and other nations. He noted Brazil and others as key actors and announced David Cushman Coyle will speak next on the British commonwealth.
The Iowan caller at the White House renewed a long friendship from the 1932 Roosevelt campaign. Roosevelt, impulsive at times, sought to appoint his old supporter to the bench while the Iowa senator resisted the unorthodox political transfer after naming a different man for the post.

Chairman Lee Holland announced Claude W. Tucker will chair a pre-induction school program for men soon to be drafted. Beunos Aires reports that Lieut. Col. Tomas Duco’s attempted coup collapsed as officers refused to follow him. The communique stated the country was tranquil and the navy and army supported President Farrell. Duco’s forces and location at Lima De Zamora were noted as the plan fell apart.

The county recorder notes a March uptick in filings with sixteen real estate transfers yesterday. Deeds and mortgage releases dominate as buyers pay cash, while few new loans appear, signaling a conservative healthy farm land market and increased activity in Washington town property.
Allied infantry and flaming guns of the 5th army halted a double barreled German armored thrust on the Anzio front. Torrential rain and mud slowed the attack while allied shellfire kept the pressure, preventing a full scale offensive to clear the beachhead.

Soviet armored forces broke into the outskirts of Pskov and drove a German retreat toward the Baltic approaches. Front reports say Gen. Popov’s operations near the Pskov Idritsa Polotsk railway are yielding a German rout with Khimova captured and the Porkhov Ostroy highway 16 miles from Ostroy and six miles from the railway.
British Mosquito bombers attacked western Germany without loss while German planes lightly bombed eastern England in their first raid in four nights. The day raid on Brunswick targeted the fighter plant and other facilities. American Flying Fortresses reportedly hit the Niedersaechsische Motorwerke plant and rail links. A few German planes crossed the east coast, at least two were shot down, and an alert sounded in London with no damage reported.
Germany unveiled a radio controlled miniature tank called the explosive beetle on the Anzio front below Rome. About 14 of the 1,000 pound explosive devices were lost in the recent German assault as only wheels moved and most units failed to reach Allied lines. Allies described the tanks as poor specimens and most were blown up by Allied artillery behind German positions.
Press dispatches report Lt. Roy D Voorhees, son of Mr and Mrs Carl Voorhees of Washington, awarded the bronze oak leaf cluster to the air medal for medium bomber missions over the coast of France. Sixteen other Iowa air corps members also received the same decoration as the War Department announced 1000 decorated officers and enlisted men, including four awarded the distinguished flying cross.
