Iowa State agronomist weighs replant options after hail damage

Garren Benson advised 30 Washington area farmers that four live bean plants per foot and good weed control lessen replanting value for beans damaged by hail. He cited July 1 planted Dorsey beans yielding about 25 bushels per acre and stressed weed control and growth stage as key factors. He noted most tall corn should recover with minor losses but some fields may allow replanting if herbicides don’t injure plants. Farmers should inspect stand density, avoid high herbicide rates, and consult hail adjusters before replant decisions as hail touched Washington County from June 23 to 26 across multiple townships.
