Seamen strike grows with broad union support
In New York the nationwide seamen strike tied up about 60 percent of the U.S. merchant fleet and drew backing from other unions that could halt all cargo handling. The NMU broke off talks with two major management groups and began a midnight walkout, with officers’ unions signaling support. The walkout targets American flagships in U.S. ports, while ships abroad remain untouched. The dispute hinges on wage reopeners in the 1965 four year contract. management says openings are exhausted. The strike involves about 55,000 NMU members and could spread to 100 ships in port immediately, then to 476 more as ships return to U.S. harbors. Waterfront unions pledged solid support, raising the risk of a nationwide disruption.
