In Birmingham Alabama officials questioned if the weather bureau is blamed for the heat. After a 102 degree day this week the bureau was asked to pay rent rising from 8480 to 943 a year.
The CIO United Steelworkers executive board approved a package contract granting basic steelworkers a 5 cents per hour raise plus fringe benefits about 8 cents an hour. Major producers including U S Steel lined up for signing as contracts expire midnight Wednesday. The agreement also expands hospitalization coverage and pension terms, effective Nov 1 with two-year insurance freeze and a three-year pension plan.
Gilbert Jr. Ardery a 48 year old Charles City petroleum distributor was sentenced to two years in federal prison and fined 10000 on four counts for income tax evasion. The judge ordered concurrent terms with due date for starting service by July 25. Ardery pleaded no defense to taxes owed for 1947 1948 1949 and 1950. Civil collection actions remain incomplete.
A horseshoe pitching tournament was announced as part of the American Legion Fourth of July celebration in Washington. It starts at Townsley Park 10 a.m. Saturday July 3 and attracts top area players. Prizes total 85 dollars, entrants pitch 100 shoes to qualify, and the eight finalists will compete in round robin 5-point games. Stanly Zager chairs the event. no advance registration needed.
The Rio Grande reached its highest flood in history at Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, cresting between 55 and 64 feet. The international bridge was closed, six people were dead and seven missing at Ozona, Texas, as rains blamed on Hurricane Alice caused widespread flooding.
Darry Levy, Washington county democratic chairman, announced the annual county convention will be held Friday July 2 in the WEFW rooms. The event opens at 1 a.m. to elect delegates to the state democratic convention in Des Moines on July 27 and to the state judicial convention. All delegates are urged to attend.
A Madison man Guy Ross 49 shot his wife Doris 41 to death near the University of Wisconsin campus then killed himself as witnesses crouched on porches. He exchanged shots with a police investigator and fired at three youths during a fatal domestic dispute sparked by Doris Ross filing divorce papers that day.
Sunset Knoll farm west of Washington hosted a major Aberdeen Angus dispersion sale. About 1 500 to 2 000 buyers from Iowa Missouri Illinois North Carolina Kansas Texas Minnesota and other states attended. Total receipts reached 127 250 with 275 head averaging 462, nine bulls at 717 and 264 females at 457.
In Washington the president and prime minister called for a general drastic reduction of armaments to apply atomic knowledge to human betterment. They endorsed peaceful associations and offered aid to secure regional peace while avoiding specific Southeast Asia references. Churchill prepared to fly to Ottawa after talks with Eisenhower, Dulles, and Eden.

Public invited for group singing personal testimonies and evangelistic sermons.
Forrest D. Walker and Dr. E. D. Miller, delegates to the National Red Cross convention in Los Angeles, will report at the Washington County Chapter annual meeting in the Court Room at the Court House at 8 p.m. July 1. Junior Red Cross members from the Boone Training Center will also present reports. The meeting includes director elections and updates on Red Cross activities.

A federal jury in New York awarded author Quentin Reynolds 175000 in damages in a libel suit against Hearst columnist Westbrook Pegler. Named defendants included Hearst Corp and Hearst Consolidated Publications Inc. The verdict sums included 190000 from Pegler, 50000 from Hearst Corp, and 24 from Hearst Consolidated, plus $1 in compensatory damages.
Sen Homer Capehart accused Clyde L Powell former FHA assistant commissioner of concealing a criminal history when he joined the government 20 years ago. Powell invoked self inquiry before the Senate Banking Committee and a Justice Department background file cited arrests for bad checks and a 1917 embezzlement claim at the Muehlebach hotel in Kansas City. Deputy Housing Chief William McKenna testified that FHA has no trace of the reports in its files. Capehart noted FBI sent two background reports to the FHA via the Civil Service Commission in 1941 and 1948.
Wino Strabala of Richmond was injured Monday afternoon after falling from a ladder at the TeBoeckhorst farm near Riverside. An Iowa City report said he suffered a broken neck and he is hospitalized at Mercy hospital in Iowa City. He was working on the TeBoeckhorst corn crib at the time.
Kansas City reports former President Truman has greatly improved and shows signs of his old fire. Dr. Wallace Graham said the condition is not critical but guarded and needs continued watching after gall bladder and appendix surgery.
The Des Moines Weather Bureau forecasts scattered thunder showers tonight with lows 55 to 60 in the northwest and 60 to 70 in the southeast, followed by 70s on Wednesday. Rivers statewide are receding below flood stage except lower Des Moines River reaches from Tracy downstream. Ottumwa’s river crest reached 16.8 feet yesterday and will drop to 11 feet Friday morning, with dikes holding back the surge.

In Quincy Indiana John Crump 29 was fatally shot by Hobart Gibson after a yard argument while they drank beer Gibson phoned police and Crump died at a hospital Gibson said Crump refused to leave and became abusive before the shooting occurred.
Weather by United Press Iowa reports partly cloudy conditions with scattered thundershowers and a cooler night. Wednesday brings more sun and showers mainly east with lows around 50 to 70 and highs near 70s, then a generally fair spell with lower temperatures Thursday. The five day outlook shows temperatures 1 to 3 degrees above normal with normals listed for north and south zones.
